Is Now Playing broken? It's been over 30 minutes since TAR finished and no thread yet????
I knew something was up when we were at the 45 minute mark and no pit stop clue yet. I hate these "To Be Continued" episodes - but this one seems to have come earlier than previous seasons.
I had to stop and rewind the part where Puddle told his wife not to be a b*tch. I even showed it to my hubby and said if he ever said that to me it would all be over...
Apparantly you had to put the dolls back together... I would anyway if I was the first team there, but if I was at the end of the pack, I don't think it would make much difference.
Love the hippies... were they speaking Russian? That's got to be a huge advantage to the other teams.
On the roadblock all I remember is Yolanda taking the Roadblock and not being able to swim. That was a little stupid of her.
Oh, and the part about doing it naked. But alas, it was not to be.

Yolanda: Who reads a Roadblock clue, which says "Who wants to take the plunge?" , and can't figure out that you are going to have to swim? After she says she will do it, then she comes out with "Oh no, I don't know how to swim, or am afraid, whatever".
What is up with 75% of the cab drivers not knowing where the trolley park was? This unfortunately leads to stupid ideas, like " We can't find it, so lets follow everyone else to the doll challenge, where we must go through 15,000 dolls to find 1 clue?"
Reminds me of the Needle in a Haystack challenge, or the Find the Right Lock out of Hundreds of Locks challenge.
I don't feel too hot about Fran and Barry being three hours behind, until we get to the airport and hey, guess what? EVERYONE is on the same plane.

Oh, Puddle is just warming up. Give him a few more episodes and he'll give HWSNBN a run for his money.
What a great moment when she says turn right and he turns ignores her and turns left. Then he dents the roof of the VW. Yeah, I want him working on my teeth.
Puddle seems to screw up on every episode. I hope this pattern continues.
Not only should "plunge" have tipped them off, but didn't they also know that they were at an swimming pool?
The zip lines have to go. Or are they mandatory every season?

The Russian word for "trolleybus" is trolleybus. The Russian word for "park" is park. (But roll your tongue a bit when saying it.)
But I can imagine that taxi drivers don't get much demand from tourists to go there.

Someday I hope to understand the idiots who decide the middle of the race is the place to face "their worst fears". I'd have a little sympathy if they were afraid of heights and both team members had to bungy jump, but when you have a choice why pick the one who might not do it?
The Hippies won points with me. When in the cathedral they not only stopped to look, but appeared to be the only ones respectful enough to remove their hats when entering.
There must have been an unseen part of the detour that told the players to reassemble the Matryoshka dolls after looking inside. That had to have added to the frustration ( along with the music and the dancers).
You'd think the players would also realize now that if the clue doesn't say "pitstop" it's probably not a pitstop. We had the advantage seeing lots of teams far away and only a minute or two to go.

When they realized it was a roadblock, Yolanda said she was going to do it, but that was before they even read it. I'm new to watching this. If it is said someone will do it, they must stick with it?

In the 'Scour It' task, 10 clues were hidden amongst the 1500 dolls there right? I think they were counting the nested dolls as dolls and not just the largest 'mother' dolls. So if there were 'X' number of 'mother' dolls there then the task becomes finding the 10 in 'X' and not 10 in 1500.

The teams read the "hint" (Who wants to take a plunge) and must choose the one team member to do the roadblock. After they have decided they can read the full clue.
Let me think:
We are at a swimming & diving facility, the clue says "Take a plunge" Gee, think we are going to have to dive in to a SWIMMING pool?!?

Thank you, that clears up some things. Agreed, the hint should have revealed the goal. I just thought she saw it was a roadblock and said she would do it.
This is one of the few shows I watch semi-live. I have to. One, I look forward to reading what is said here, and two, they talk about it at work.
Oh, and so far, my favorite team is the Hippies.

I don't feel too hot about Fran and Barry being three hours behind, until we get to the airport and hey, guess what? EVERYONE is on the same plane.I long ago learned that it is best to think of Amazing Race as lots of little races where you don't want to come in last. Think of it in these terms and you won't be too upset by the massive bunching.
What I was amazed with is how few people seemed to know exactly where St. Basil's was in Red Square. Maybe it shows their age some, and maybe it's because I travelled to Russia/St. Petersburg/Moscow back in 1992 when I was in business school and I knew where exactly on/in Red Square St. Basil's, Lenin's Tomb, and the Gumm department store all were. But, I guess I am asking too much..........
And part of me thinks I remember touring the Chaika Basiin when we were there.
I love when you recognize locations along the race!

I am not impressed with the intelligence of the "Double D's"...and not just because they left their pack behind.
I think each doll consisted of 10 dolls so really you'd have a 1 in 15 chance of finding the correct "master doll" that would contain a clue (assuming you were the first team). I hope I did the math right.
Go team Hippies!

Ok, math is not my strong suit, but in your estimation, wouldn't that mean there were only 150 "master dolls?" There seemed to be a LOT more than 150 there.

The teams read the "hint"
Is it a requirement that they always read the clue out loud TOGETHER? That grinds me! Why in Unison? Do they do it again (edit it) if they screw it up? There were parts of this that I thot for sure were scripted and almost like these guys were reading their parts.

Not a bad episode. As I watch Lake and his wife I see her being as much of a problem as he is. Neither of them would be peaches to be doing this with.
Watching episodes like this one really make me wish I could do something like the Amazing Race. It looked like a blast. Although I'd probably come off like Lake and everyone in the world would hate me and think I'm a terrible husband. :(

Be aware that Phil's blog (always an interesting read on cbs.com) for this episode contains a spoiler at the end as to the teams arrival order at the 'virtual pitstop'.
Has Phil said anything about there being a rule for how many Roadblocks a person can perform?

That is a good question. I know they have implemented that rule in past seasons, but I don;t remember him saying it this time either.

Sheesh, Team Horndog was in fine form this episode. But then, Double D doesn't seem to mind, mores the pity. I was still glad that Horndog beat Puddle to the mat, even though it wasn't a pitstop.
Of the remaining teams, this is my current order of favorites:
Geeks (they're having fun, and they actually like each other...go figure)
Hippies (hopefully they'll tone down their schtick, but they're still pretty fun)
Ray and Yo (Nice people, supportive of one another...they just need to relax a little)
Wanda and Des (Mom has got to pull it together, but Des is composed enough for the both of them...and incredibly cute)
MoJo (I wasn't sure about them at first, mainly due to her over-reacting and his nasty remarks, but they are nice to one another, and seem to be pretty strong racers)
Double D's (I want to like them more, since they realize that their looks won't get them anywhere on the race, they actually have to pull it together and work hard...but the 'alliance' with Horndog is going to pull them down. I wouldn't be surprised if they left the Race wallet because they were hurrying so they wouldn't make the boys wait. Not smart)
Horndog (if every other sentence out of their mouths didn't have something to do with sex or girls, they'd be pretty fun to watch. Strong racers, not too bright, but having fun...but I just can't get past the sleeze)
FrankenBarry (Oy Vey...enough with the "We're done" "We've lost" "The race is over for us". Ever watch the show before? Ever heard of Bunching? Quit already)
Puddle and Doormat (bleh...go away please)
One thing I remember when I was in Russia was that sometimes the dolls were so hard to open....since they are not lubricated in any way and the wood often swelled in warmer weather....made it impossible to open sometimes. I imagine this could be a problem for the racers (even with the dolls inside a building).
I brought home a neat set of all the leaders from Catherine the Great up to Gorby. Neat. I also remember seeing Beatles dolls, US leaders dolls, etc. Fun stuff.

I just looked at it.....great read. Phil is pretty hilarious. Loved this quote:
Speedos, or whatever the local brand is here, seem to be compulsory for the men. It’s just not a good look on everyone.

I just went back and rewatched, when Phil introduced the task, they showed a wide shot of the dolls. There is clearly in excess of 1000 mother dolls, therefore it indeed was 1500 mother dolls or 1 in 150--how tidious. Yet, fun to watch. :)

When putting the dolls back together again, I'd be tempted to twist them to make them as hard as possible for the next team to open.

During the good old Communist days, two beautiful young women of undetermined professions came up to me in Red Square. One of them said that I looked like a foreigner she used to know. After some small talk, she asked, "Would you like to have sex with both of us?"
I declined their offer but gave them a couple of packs of "Eve" cigarettes as gifts. I walked away thinking that Moscow was going to be a very friendly place and that all those years of Russian lessons were not going to go to waste.

I don't know if it was 1500 but it was clearly way more than 150. They have 4 large tables full of "master" dolls. I tend to think that the 1500 refered to the number of Sets of matruska(sp?) dolls. In this case the chance options turned out well due to the problem finding the barn, but that is almost never true otherwise.

A few thoughts:
The trolley barn the teams had to find was #8, and I seem to recall someone (Team Horndog?) saying that they'd just have the cab take them to the first one they can find. What good does it do to go to Trolley Barn #1-7? I don't know if the cabbies would be able to find #8 without help (from a trolley driver, hello!), but I did notice that many of the cabs had large phone numbers with a lot of "8"'s in them...

Well, it was in a Kansas City living room and not on an around the world race, but I've met you...and I doubt you could come off like Dr. Puddle, DDS even on your WORST possible day. :D
Puddle seems to screw up on every episode. I hope this pattern continues.
Indeed. It's almost becoming a game on its own. Where will his wrong directions lead them THIS week?
Also...did I just not notice it before, but did Dr. Puddle become the first contestant ever on TAR to be openly disappointed with the next destination? ("I was hoping we wouldn't go to Russia!") Not counting the entire Family Edition, of course, where EVERYONE was disappointed...

A Team Snapshot in my view:
* Team Nerd. They're clearly the attitude winners in this bunch. You could drop one of 'em off the side of the cliff and they'd figure it out, laughing the entire time.
* Team Hippie. They're still a bit over the top, still trying too hard to be funny, but I can't argue with their antics in lightening things up most of the time. I'd like to see 'em spook out Dr. Puddle, myself...that'd be worth extra money.
* Ray & Yolanda. They're generally pretty cool, are athletic for the parts that need that. Bad move at the pool, but she got through it and it didn't seem to take her long.
* Monica & Joseph. Same kind of team, and not much drama out of them (a good thing).
* Wanda & Desiree. Mom's a bit out of it. But the daughter does seem to have the ability to pull her back from the edge.
* Team Double-D. Not as bad as I thought they'd be, but the "alliance" with Team Horndog is giving me the creeps. And one wonders what they actually DID at that pitstop. "We had a REALLY good time." Yipes!
* I would like Team Horndog, if they thought with their, ummm, brains. Neither of these teams goes anywhere until they keep their minds on the game, and off the other team.
* I keep wanting to root for Fran and Barry. But their defeatist attitude just does not go away. If they somehow managed to get to the finale in first, they'd probably think they were about to be eliminated. (It's not likely, and again, mostly due to mental miscues as opposed to a lack of youthful physical strength. Happens time and again on this show.)
* That leaves the Mad Dentist and his Unfortunate Bride. Every year's gotta have a villain.

I don't think they meant that they would go to the first trolley barn they found, but rather the first of either Trolley Barn #8 or the Dubrovka Theater.
While Team Horndog's obsession with Team DD is a little unhealthy, I was glad to hear them say that it's really just going to be a pit stop thing and not during the race. I was also glad to see them kick the girls out of the cab when the girls made a mistake and not be willing to go back with them.
Frankenbarry are just super annoying. They don't have any confidence that they will be able to do anything and that causes them to spend way more time than they should on tasks.
Is it possible to just inadvertently leave a team member stranded somewhere and just continue the race solo? If so, I hope Desiree does so with Wanda. Man, that woman is annoying.

Even though there were a TON of dolls to go through, it seemed like the ones that did that got through it faster. I am sure that is partly due to the fact that the place was hard to find. I don't blame the cabbies. After all, how often do you take anyone, let alone a tourist, to where the trollies are stored? We saw several teams find a doll in the episode and not a single trolley was finished with its washing. I am sure there is some luck to it but I would have picked the dolls.

rule number 1 of AR (ok, maybe not 1, but close): Always pick the challange where YOU have the most control. Anybody that has seen the "Needle in the haystack" type of challanges should know this.
The doll people just got lucky that the other place was very hard to find.

This may be an overreaction to the response to the AR family edition. I actually agree but mostly since I find it so juvenile to act that way, regardless of the time slot. At 10, they are certainly well within the rules to go this way but I don't think it serves them well. Flo had more chemistry with Drew than either of the D's has with team hunk and where did it get Drew?

Still liking BJ/Tyler the best. Getting kind of worried that they couldn't find the other detour and had to switch up to the other one, but they were nice and lucky to find it so fast , and even before Fran and Barry which is a plus.
Where in the world did Monica and Joseph's and Dave/Lori's cabbie take them to?? The scenic tour? They even got there behind Wanda/Desiree and Double Dee's
I guess it was a nice surprise to put a TBC in there so early, and next week's episode looks pretty good.

They have waited for other teams to start so they could then follow them around, and they did that at least twice in one episode, following the hippie team from the pit stop and then following them again at the end to the next pit stop. Taking the initiative and actually figuring out a way of getting somewhere on their own is going to be needed at some point. Relying totally on someone else to get you somewhere is not the best racing strategy.

Team 911 + sleaze = Team Horndog
I don't recall if they said it in the episode or if it was noted in a thread...
I was researching the locations for updating the Google Earth file of the race (which is pretty much done; I'll post it tonight or tomorrow) when I read this about the Dubrovka Theater where they searched through the dolls...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow_Theatre_Siege
The Moscow theatre hostage crisis was the October 23, 2002 seizure of a crowded Moscow theatre by Chechen terrorists, who took over 900 hostages and demanded the withdrawal of Russian forces from Chechnya. After a siege of two and a half days, Russian Spetsnaz raided the building with the assistance of an unidentified "knockout gas". All of the 42 terrorists were killed, along with 130 of the hostages, with no Spetsnaz casualties.
I remember that event, and you would think that such history would warrant a mention in the show. Maybe it's even why they picked that location. I wonder why they didn't, and did the contestants know about this place...?
IJustLikeTivo

I would think they would go out of their way NOT to mention it. A very sad ending to the event.

Perhaps, but there is historical significance to that location. Just like when they went to the house that was the last port of those taken for the slave trade in Dakar, Senegal in Season 6, and showed Gus and Hera having a poignant moment, or visiting the prison cell of Neslon Mandela, or making the Weaver family go on a race track.
I just think that they wouldn't have picked the place by accident...it's history must have a part in the selection. So maybe they just changed their minds about making a point of it. Didn't want to bring the show down, I guess.

Todd, I think you would do really well on a show like this...as long as there are no spinning teacups involved! ;)

I can see it now, I'd get there to start the race and there were be some team of C and AH and my shoulders would just drop. I'm powerless against that combination. :)
