I'm trying to back up my series 1 tivo disk using an XP machine.

The XP disk in primary master (hda1)
The Tivo disk in secondary slave (hdd)

I can read hda1 ok. (dir /mnt/dos ), but mfsbackup tells me the disk is readonly.

A mount commnad tells me hda1 is type ntfs (rw).
An edit of AUTOEXEC.BAT comes up as readonly.

I've tried other hardware configs (swapped the drives over), but still get the same.

How do I software enable the XP disk for writing ?

You need an FAT32 partition on the hda drive to use for the TiVo backup.

Can I add a Fat32 partition onto a NTFS disk without reformatting ?

Can I have a fat32 disk (ie primary slave) in an NTFS system ?

or do I have to crate a FAT32 boot system ?

Yes, if you have the tools (like partionmagic). You can shrink the NTFS partition and add a FAT32 partition (only needs to be about 2GB).

Yes.

or do I have to crate a FAT32 boot system ?
No. You are booting a Linux OS.

I've now got a blank 40gb disk.

Can you tell me how do I format it as FAT32 from XP running on NTFS ?

Is it just FORMAT D: /FS:FAT32 ?

You should be able to right click on the drive in My Computer and select format. I think there is box there for either format system.

Go to computer management, select disk management and right click on the 40gb.
