Might help to know what you typed when you did this.

I typed
mfsrestore -s 127 -r 4 -zxpi /mnt/tivo.bak /dev/hdd I also tried
mfsrestore -s 127 -zp1 /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdd
Received pretty much same message from each. The 160GB HD is a brand new drive- Do I need to format it with a fat32 partition first. Thanks for your help

I assume the 2GB drive is FAT32. The new target drive does not need to be formatted. I also assume you are using the LBA48 version of MFstools. You say you copied the image to the 2GB drive. How did you do this? It should have been done from the original Sony drive using mfsbackup per hinsdale.
Once the backup image is properly recorded onto hda you can restore using the first restore command in your first reply if the new drive is the secondary slave (hdd). Then run copykern and follow the prompts.

I backuped to fat32 2GB hd using hinsdale. I assume backup went ok as it completed. Is there a way to check before restore? I used mfstools v2.0. Should I use LBA48 version of MFstools instead? The only downloads I see are the 2.0 version. Thanks for any suggestions
