Is there any way to move my recordings from my current Tivo to a new one, except for the obvious, but very time consuming approach of playing from one and recording on the other? Basically, I' would like to copy the recording files and directory to the new Tivo. My understanding is that the upgrade methods for copying the data on a Tivo disk don't allow the new disk to operate on any other Tivo.

Also, identify the recording files on my Tivo, and then upload them to a PC so that they can be put on DVD?

Are we talking about Series2 models here? If so, you could just use multi-room viewing (MRV) and TiVoToGo (TTG) to transfer the recordings to another TiVo and your PC respectively.

You may want to do a search for multiroom viewing (MRV) and for Tivo to Go (TTG) for information.

Another path to a DVD is to get a standalone DVD recorder - connects and works just like a VCR. Use the "Save to VCR" function in the Tivo.

Some people want to do edits before burning to DVD, a DVD with recorder will help do that. If you want to record oddball-length shows (i.e 2hrs 15min) to a single DVD then I suggest you get a DVD recorder that has a variable record rate.

Finally, some people prefer a DVD recorder over a PC because it's just much quicker/simpler. I can do PC capture/edit/burns with the best of them and I much prefer the the DVD recorder method - much less hands-on involvement.

To make good DVD recordings don't buy the cheapest DVD recorder at Cheapo Mart and expect them to look as good as TTG/networked transfers (with DVD burn on a PC). With a good quality DVD recorder the results are almost as good as a TTG/networked copy.
