I currently have a Sony Grand WEGA 42" LCD TV...a 40 hour TiVo with DVD burner (DRT400)..and a basic cox digital cable box (digital content, such as the guide, and PPVs, which are digital, enabled, just no digital programming in the...100-400 range)

I can watch the standard channels just fine through the box and record em with TiVo. However, as I just found out tonight, after purchasing a PPV event, I cannot record PPVs with my Tivo. It goes to a greyish screen. Is this common? Is this like what I've been hearing on the news about like...HBO isn't going to allow programs to be recorded by PVR/DVRs? This really irritated me. Cox of course, had no suggestion other than to remove the TiVo from the equation and plug straight into the TV, which I had to reluctantly do, thus messing up the night I originally had planned (studying while PPV recorded, so I could watch the PPV tomorrow night).

On a side note, I know the DirecTV with Tivo thing ended, but can you use TiVo with their boxes? And can you record PPVs with them? This really annoyed the heck outta me, and I'm very inclined to switch if this is a possibility.

Cox's DVR stinks, that's why I dropped it and got TiVo.

PPV's are coded to not allow recording (pay per view with the operative word being "per"). Sounds like TiVo sees and honors that. I doubt the Cox DVR would record it either.

Don't have any personal experience but I'd wager that if PPV is carried over satellite that it will be similarly protected.

What DirecTV with TiVo thing ended ?
My DIRECTV receiver with TiVo works fine. I record PPV all the time.

I dunno...just seems when you go to DirecTV's website and see if they have a box with Tivo..they don't have one listed anymore.

And to the other guy above you...Cox has their own DVR that can record PPVs, and recording a program that's on for a specifically allotted time, their DVR works great. However, on a live show (in this case, Monday night wrestling) they just don't have an option to allow for a 15 minute overrun. So I lose the last 15 minutes, unless you count recording the show behind that...which works until the show after it is mysteriously changed, because then their DVR gets all confused.

I have Cox cable, and I have their HD DVR as well. Let me tell you it's awful! At least once a week I get a recording error for no reason at all. I can't wait until the series 3 comes out so I can give em back their DVR.

On a side note. recording PPV "should" work if you have the Cox Motorola DVR and then run your tivo through that. I was able to record PPV using this method. It was a pain for me to hook up, but when I had my Motorola DVR (that wasn't HD) the serial connection was active so I didn't have to use IR.
