A few months ago, I finally convinced my significant other to make the switch to a DVR. At first, she didn't see the need for it but now can't live without it. We bought an R10 from the local Best Buy for $99 because we had a $50 Best Buy gift card and DTV was offering a $99 rebate at the time. So, we actually gained $50 cash when we finally received the $99 rebate check. :D

Anyway, the R10 has been great since day one. However, now that I have become more savy with it, I want install a larger hard drive and do more with it but now finding out that I can't mod it very much.

My question is, what unit should I replace it with and where should I purchase such a unit from? The DSR7000 seems to be a popular model and there are currently a few in the $35 range on eBay.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Get the $60 bare bones DVR from Weaknees, ($35 for dvr w/o hard drive + $25 for a card that will work), install your larger HD and hack away.

It's what I want to do now. Now, will that be a leased unit?

*ducks for cover*

EDIT: I don't think you can easily get a card if you buy it from Ebay (if WK is the seller). If you go through the WK's site, you can grab the card there.

Would the card in my R10 be compatible with any other units?

Thanks

Maybe, maybe not. There are a couple of posts around here talking about this very thing. I know that the R10 I just got, the card will not work as it is the newer generation and married to the unit. However, the R10 that I've had for a long time, (whenever they first came out), the card may work. There are some posts talking about how it just might work.

DTV may not send you card. My plan was to order both the driveless unit and card, then try my card from my older, currenly unused R10. If it works, then return the unopened card to WK, (if that is possible, haven't looked yet). If it doesn't work, then I got a plan "B" at the ready.

- JTFrom what I understand, an R10 is a RID unit so the card is married to the reciever, so the answer is a big NO. Buy the unit that "tortio" recommended if you can still get one. All of the hackable DirecTiVos are disappearing quickly, and even the R10 are disappearing quickly. Which is a reason I bought two BRAND Hughes SD-DVR80s from ValueElectronics.Com in January and February, which are fully hackable.

As long as the R10 is in working order, why not just get another unit for you to hack? I'd hate to see you in the dog house when you screw up the hack. :) BTW, the R10 can easily have a larger hard drive added. It's the other hacks that haven't been done, yet.

Yeah, I plan on getting a 3x8 multiswitch so I can have two DVR's in the bedroom and a single DVR in the living room. The GF and I spend most of the time in our bedroom as it is also our office at the moment. So the R10 will be dedicated to her shows and a hacked DSR7000 will be for me.
