Hi there ..

Awesome website here.

I've followed the guidelines on setting up a PPP connection to allow my Phillips DSR7000 make its daily phone call thru my cable modem connection. I purchased the 1/8th Stereo cable and and DB9 female connector from Radio Shack and spliced them together. I followed the directions on setting up the modem to COM 1 and also setting up the new network connection.

HOWEVER ... I can't seem to make a connection from my Tivo to the internet. I keep getting an error code on the Tivo stating that the connection "Failed. Service not answering".

As the instructions indicated, I deleted the incoming connection I created in my Networks folder and started up Hyperterminal to see if there was any actual info transferring back and forth.

I did see a bunch of garbage pop up on the screen preceded by the tilde "~", so I know 1. I have the wires of the serial cable assigned to the right numbe on the Db9 connector and 2. there is at least some communication being attempted. I DID NOT, however, see the "User Request" in this garbage that popped up.

As the instructions noted, i changed the modem speed to various levels on both the modem properties and on the hyperterminal set up. No luck.

I thought maybe my network settings were wrong as I am using a cable modem and lynksys router, so I changed the IP settings from DHCP automatic assignment to a specific range or 192.168.1.1 thru 192.168.1.10. That still didn't work. I verified thru the command prompt using ipconig /all that the DHCP IS active as well.

Still no luck.

Any suggestions??? I'm at a loss.

Thanks in advance, guys.

Andy

Run the windows services manager (services.msc) and make sure some key services are enable and running. I believe you need Remote Access Connection Manager, Remote Access Auto Connection Manager, Routing and Remote Access and perhaps Telephony services running.

Let us know if this helps. My laptop is setup for PPP (I just activated and upgraded my free DSR7000 that way) and I can double-check it's settings when I get home tonight.

Hi .

Thanks for the response. I ran the service manager and activated those settings if they weren't already running, but still am not gettting a positive result.

I appreciate your help. Let me know if you can think of anything else as I'm out of ideas.

Thanks !

Just a thought, but the number set for the Tivo to call is still the 770 area code phone number in ATL. I changed the Prefix as described in the instructions, but does having an actual phone number listed make a difference?

I don't believe its possible to delete a number and leave that section blank, is it?

I have all my DirecTivo's calling in via my internet connection.

1) Where did you go to find the instructions? This Link (http://www.tivohelp.com/archive/tivohelp.swiki.net/45.html) is a good place to start.
2) What did you enter for the prefix code?
3) Is you "modem" speed the same as the prefix?
4) Try setting up the modem and prefix code for 9600 or 19200

John,

The URL you listed was the same that I used for a guideline. I have the prefix code set at the same modem speed; ie. ,#211 for 115200 modem speed, etc. I've tried various modem speeds and correlating prefix codes as well.

I went ahead and ordered the cable from 9th tee in hopes its my cable that I spliced together thats the cause of the problems. We'll see.

Thanks . Andy

When the tivo is connecting to your PC, does the incomming connection account in network connections show activity?

That was going to be my next question...if it does, then the cable is fine and it's a configuration issue.

Although it doesn't directly solve the OP's PPP problem, might I suggest the indirect solution of simply "zippering" the DSR-7000, and never worrying about a call again? It's pretty easy, and I think anybody with enough computer savvy to setup the PPP thing would have no trouble with the zipper procedure. (Of course it has other benefits as well.)

The Incoming Connections Icon shows "no clients connected" when I try it. Doesn't make sense. I'm getting data when I run the Hyperterminal.

Oh well. I'm going to wait for my cable from 9th tee. I'm hoping the cable I spliced together is the culprit. It will be here on FRI, so I have something to look forward to doing this weekend.

BTW, I checked out the "zipper" you mentioned above. WAY COOOL, but way above me I think. I would love to be able to do that but I don't think I have the skills.

I'll check back in on FRI when I get the cable!!

Thanks !

Hi tca32123,

What IP address is your router giving your computer? I would suggest assigning two IP addresses close to your computer's IP address. If you computer is 192.168.1.2, then I would use static IP addresses 192.168.1.8 and 192.168.1.9 for an example. If you assign a whole block in the range that your computer is in, then there is a possibility of IP conflict and then serial/PPP doesn't work.

Second thought, there is a file generated when your computer boots. The file is located in the Windows directory--C:\Windows\ModemLog_Communications cable between two computers.txt. Try a Daily Call and post a copy of your modem log here after a call attempt. We might get a clue of what is or is not happening.

Keep us posted.

John

Cactus46, BlindLemmonLarry and JohnTivo ---- YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!!

I got it working! SWEEET!

Thank you so much for your help. If you can't tell, I'm very excited!

Now I have the bug, so I'm gonna get up the nerve to try the zipper maybe in a month or two!

:D :D :D

That's great. So what got it working, the new serial cable?

Read up on the zipper, and give it a shot when you're comfortable. Use a new (hopefully big and cheap!) drive...that way if things go wrong, it's easy to pop the old drive back in until you sort things out. The zipper is a breeze, much easier than the older 4.01b hack/upgrade I used on my DSR-704. You do need to be equipped for network access (supported USB2.0 to ethernet or USB WiFI adapter) to complete the zipper, so read up and plan ahead.

I am having DirecTV installed next Friday (17th). I currently have two Tivos at home and they are both connected wirelessly to my home network.
Is this not possible with DirecTV and the DVRs they provide?
