been reading the post an I am getting confused as to what hardware I have and what hardware the post refer to. My setup is direct tv R15 boxed purchased at circuit city. the other is an R10 from direct tv. are either one of these boxes considered tivo for the sake of discussion in this forum. is there a diference between tivo and dvr?

The R10 is a TiVo (just a brand name of a DVR) and the R15 has a sister forum over at DBStalk.com.

what is the difference between the R10 and the R15. should I send the R10 back to direct and request and R15. the only difference I see is the amount of recording time

Actually, to be precise (split hairs or whatever), the R10 is NOT a TiVo. It's a DirecTV receiver with TiVo service. This is not important as far as discussion on this forum is concerned, but you will read about features (TTG, HMO and so on), that an actual TiVo box has, but the R10 (or other D* receivers) do not.

The R15 is a D* receiver with NDS software and, as MT said, is not discussed here but at DBSTALK.COM

Personally I'd keep both. The TiVo is far better than that "other DVR" currently. But, that "other" DVR will basically be DirecTV's flagship standard definition DVR going forward. Unlike the DirecTiVos, it will be updated (and needs many) for years to come. Do check out DBStalk.com and judge for yourself though. Talk about non-TiVo DVR's as been referred to other forums for quite some time now...

As Forrest Gump would say "...and that's all I've got to say 'bout that."
