View Full Version : TivoServer & NAS Storage

Here's my fairly simple question. I have a networked TiVo and a NAS storage device. I would like to have the NAS drive serve up content directly to my TiVo without involving my computer or a formal fileserver of any kind (an option which would be a lot of things -- including overkill). I know this would be possible if TiVo were UPnP compatible (because my NAS storage device is), but for whatever reason, it's not.

So here's my question, is there ANY way to do what I want to do (i.e. have TiVo pull content off my NAS device without involving my computer)? Can this be done without involving TivoServer? Is my only option to get the NAS device to "run" an embedded version of TivoServer? Is that even an option?

Thanks.

Last I heard no one found a way to get NAS to work. There also is no option to run tivo on an NAS. Maybe a very stripped down custom PC could satisfy your needs?

Another thought. TD is pretty good about dealing with shortcuts. Maybe you could get a shortcut for each file into the TivoRecordings folder from the NAS.

JustinThyme found a way to get shortcuts to content on the internet. Try a version of that on your LAN.

Following the instructions from the link above, I was able to get my Buffalo LinkStation NAS to serve music to my Tivos. I disabled photo support because the LinkStation was too slow with rendering the thumbnails. I suspect that the LinkStation does not have enough CPU/RAM to do the rendering.

To date, I haven't found any solutions yet that would serve video files(MPEG-2) from a LinkStation to a Tivo.

What I would like to see is for Tivo to support DIVX files that are served from a NAS.
