My RCA DVR40 was getting really slow at responding to the remote, so I decided maybe allowing it to update would help. It had been 554 days since I did the intial guided setup. So I bring the box up to my parents and unplug their Tivo and hook mine up and try to call. It fails while negotiating, I try a different phone jack and the same thing happens. I being the idiot that I am decide to do a complete system reset, so it's just like it came out of the box. Now I have to do the intial call thing again, failed while negotiating. So now my I can only use it as a receiver, no tivo functions. I call Directv and they tell me the modem is fried and I would have to buy a new DVR from them. I find this hard to believe, the modem was only used once! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this thing working again!

You sure your parents have POTS (Plain old telephone service) and not something like Vonage? A Dtivo works perfectly every time if you have POTS service.

If the phone line has DSL, make sure you're using a filter. I had the same problem until I put a filter on the phone jack that my Tivo uses.

Just try it again, I've had that happen every so often with my DirecTiVo's...but I would agree with the other poster about DSL...put the filter on the line when you call in.

No DSL, I'm positive it is my unit. I literally unplugged everything from their Tivo and plugged mine in. I tried it all afternoon with no luck. And no, they don't have Vonage or other voip type of service in fact they probably don't even know what that is! Any help would be appreciated, if the modem is fried do I have any options? Is it possible that a different time of day, like 2am would work better? I noticed that their unit updates in the afternoons. I even forced a call on their unit(they have a HD Direct Tivo Box) and it worked just fine. So once again, it must be my unit!

I also have a standalone box in my bedroom that I have networked wirelessly to my router. So I asked the DirecTV person I spoke with on sunday if that is ever gonna be a possibility and she told me that they were working on a update to do that! I was happy, thinking that I could just update my unit that way, but then I remember I had reset the box and would still need to do the intial call. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You say you re-ran Guided Setup, so my suggestion may not help.
I was having a similar issue with my unit recently. I did the 'clear and delete' everything. Took a couple of hours. Then I did a 'test call' to reset the clock, and then did the daily call. I watched the progress of the test call and it did indeed state that it was resetting the clock.
Good luck.

Try a 'test call', not a 'daily call.' If that succeeds, then you will know it isn't the modem.
If it succeeds, then do the daily call. Watch the progress of the call on the screen and you may get some clues as to where it's failing.

This unit hasn't been hacked has it? The Zipper (as well as several how-to guides) set up a static route that will result in the phone home to TiVo failing during negotiation.

Test call doesn't work and the unit has never been hacked. Thanks though!
Our lines are bad and we need to run with the dialing option on our old GXCEBOTs
,#034
comma pound zero three four
Anything else and we have negotiating problems. I think it slows the modem down, but doesn't make much difference these days as it has very little to transfer.

Hack the unit and you won't need the modem any more.

I did try ,#034 it didn't work. If I hack the box how do I do the intial call. With my standalone box I had to call in first. I have no problem hacking it, but only if it will work!

It does sound like your modem is dead, but I don't see how dialing in will activate the Tivo service. Calling a CSR should be the way to handle that. You can also go to your DirecTV.com account and try to activate your Tivo service that way.

What version of the software are you on? If you are on 6.2 you are ready to go to do a zipper on it. If you are on 3.1, then you will need to upgrade it. Since the modem doesn't appear to work you can upgrade to 6.2 by using the InstantCake CD you can purchase and download from PTVupgrades.
There is no reason to have to dial in. activating the unit is done via the sat, so you can do that via a CSR or even from your account online (as I understand it).

It has 3.1 on it. From what I undedrstand you are saying, I don't have to do the intial call if I upgrade to 6.2 from the cd. If this is correct I will give it a try. Is there anything else I will need to do to get it working again?

FYI, right now I'm using the box as a reciever and it works fine. If I try to record anything or go to Now Playing it says I need to do a call.

Read the following:

Thats my understanding also, is that if you do the Zipper (again, you will need to do the InstantCake upgrade to 6.2 first) you do not need an initial call. But thats just my understanding... I've never done it that way myself. You might want to search the Zipper thread or wait for someone else thats done this to confirm.
As always... YMMV

Very interesting, sounds like the same problem on a different model box. Any ideas?
