I have spent a while searching through these forums and I'm still not quite sure exactly what I will need to have my Hughes HR10-250 do the initial setup call over the internet. I have no land line and I have a cable modem internet connection.

Some posts seem to suggest that all I need is to plug a dongle in to my receiver and then connect it to my computer(and then just use the ,#401 prefix). I currently do not have a router or hub; just an ethernet cable directly from my cable modem to my computer.

Other posts suggest that I need to buy a Tivo-supported network adapter. I understand that there are other options, like connecting with PPP serial, but it sounds like connecting via ethernet is the quicker method, and I can't seem to find a detailed breakdown of exactly what I will need with my particular model.

Can I plug the receiver directly to my cable modem to make the initial setup call(to activiate Tivo)? Do I need to instead get a router and/or a supported adapter to make this work? I checked the "System Information" on my Tivo and IF I am looking in the right place then the software version is currently 3.1.5f...

Anybody willing to help a noob out?

Hello

If I were you I would get a router. Having a router is the best way to protect your system. You can't beat the hardware firewall...

Then you can hook up your new HR10 too the router and forget about it....

Thanks for the response. I understand and agree with what you said, but I am wondering if it is REQUIRED or if I can complete my initial setup call without it. I have read conflicting posts; some say that if my sofware version is less than 7.xxx then I NEED to use a land line to call in the first time and update, but other posts seem to imply that I can do the initial call-in over the internet even though my software version is 3.1.

Anyone know for sure?

The HR10-250, the HD Directivo, does not support networking. You will need to use a phone line, perhaps at a friend's house, to do the initial setup. After that you don't need a phone line, but you will get a nag screen everyday after about 30 days, but it will still work just fine. You already have the most current software version for the HR10-250. The 7.x software is for standalone Tivos only.

You can add networking capability to your HR10-250 by hacking it. Do a search in the Underground forum for Zipper. I *think* though that you need to get it setup first via the phone line before you can zipper it; hopefully someone else can confirm this.

Thanks for the response, that was exactly what I needed to know...you saved me countless hours of what would seem to be futile attempts to get this working(and the money I would have spent on the adapter).

Thanks again.
