Hello
Was just wondering what the obligations are on a deal like this as far as activating the unit? Its a brand new sealed unit from factory without any upgrades and includes a non-activated card.
I realize theres no warranty support on this deal but would like to have one for a backup....
Thanks!!

Hello
Auction wound up as high as one from Weaknees so passed on it. So has there been anybody thats gotten one of these off of EbaY? Did you have to activate it right away or could you wait?
Thanks for the reply

Not trying to be mean...But what did the auction terms say? Was it from a dealer who required activation? Did it come with a Card that required activation?

Referring to this auction?

Does not seem top require activation, unless you want the $100 rebate. This would give you a 2 year commitment though on the receiver, or a 1 year without the rebate. I could be wrong though!!

Well, it is new with a new card. From DirecTV's perspective when you go to activate it, they will consider it to be a LEASED unit, and at such time as you stop service, you will have to give it to them.
They changed from a sell model to a lease model on March 1st. There is currently a huge amount of confusion on all discussion forums as to what is what with regard to details, and people have gotten as many different answers from CSR's as there are CSR's to ask.
I think the rebate ended on February 28, so you may not get that.
In summary, proceed with caution.

Had no knowledge of *lease* issues.
I bought 2 R10's from Goodguys in Nov 2005 and replaced my 2 35 hour DVR's with those. At the end of 2 years term, I will *own* these, right ?

Anything purchased before March 1st, 2006 is owned, providing you meet the one or two year service commitment requirement.
Anything purchased at "subsidized prices" on or after March 1st is leased. "Subsidized" prices mean anything other than full market value (not necessarily retail). For example, a standard DVR (R10 or R15) might be bought for $99. That is a subsidized price. Full market is something like $350.
I don't know all the prices or all the details, the one I cited above is just an example. There are several active threads regarding the lease program - read those.

Thanks Carl. I will read the threads. I come to this site once every few months so this *lease* business is all news to me.
Let me tell you. When I got 2 R10's back in Nov last year, they were on clearance for something like $75-80 each and I even got $100 rebate from DTV. So $60 for 2 R10's for me. Good deal ?
Also I have 2 Phillips 40 hour DTV DVR's that I replaced. Better keep them than sell ?

I would for the hard drives in the 2 Phillips 40 hour can always be upgraded to give you more recording space.

K. Thanks.
However what I was thinking was upgrade to HD receivers with Tivo but now I have to lease those, huh ?

Here is an interesting question. Lets say you bought a brand spanking new R10 on feb 20 and it breaks under warranty will the replacement you get after 3/1 be owned or leased. Seems unfair totaly for a fair purchased item becoming a lease jus cause its defective.
