I currently have the directv hd dvr in my family room. In my bedroom I just have the old style (sat60 I believe) tuner hooked to an old tv. We never use the tv in the bedroom, so I am planning to unhook that tv and drop some wires into the garage. I'd like to get a flat panel tv for the garage.

My question is what do I need to make the tv in the garage work with HD. Obviously I need an hd ready tv and an HD receiver. Is there something I'm missing?

I assume I need to get an HD receiver from directv. Any ideas what that will cost?

Sorry for lots of questions, but talking to some of the CSR's can be pretty confusing.

Also, I'm in LA, have a 5 lnb dish and receive locals through the satalite on the HD DVR.

I am looking to do the same thing. I have an HD Tivo in the family room and and want to add another HD Tivo to my bedroom. I have been looking around a bit and it seems like its a complete disaster to try and get this done.

Directv has switched over to "leasing" their receivers so you still pay $499 for the receiver but you dont actually own it. I dont see how anyone would want to do this. Plus you have to agree to a 2 year extension.

There seem to be a million different rebates if you call Directv and haggle with them in customer retention and get lucky.

Or you can get one on ebay, and you may or may not be able to get some $200 rebate if the receiver hasnt been activated before. I'm not really sure how the rebate works when you buy it off ebay though.

Then there is the installation. You will need someone to drop an additional cable down for the 2nd tuner on the tivo as well as another line for the OTA antenna. I dont know how much that is or if you can get directv to do it for you.

Add to all of this the fact that the HD Tivo will be obsolete this year when Directv starts rolling out the new MPEG-4 HD DVRs (non-tivo) and I am overwealmed.

So from where I sit getting a new HD Tivo seems a lot harder then you might think and could cost up to $700 or as low as $200 depending on how you get it.

Can anyone help shed some light on getting a 2nd HD Tivo in the post-leasing era of direct TV?

Thanks...

For a non-DVR regular DirecTV HD receiver you need the H20 (?) for MPEG4 reception.
