View Full Version : HR10-250 able to record two separate channels at once?

Something amazing happened last night.
Let me explain.
I have the DirecTV HR10-250 PVR. I had the installer hook up
two separate feeds off the dish so I can watch one channel while
recording another. To date, I have never had the need to use the
option.
So, last night I had two programs that I wanted to record that
were roughly on at the same time...
AMERICAN IDOL (Fox 8-9:30pm)
LOST (ABC 9-10:00pm)
Both of these programs are in my SEASON PASS.
However, as you can see, the times overlap so I knew that only
ONE show would record that night, and I put AMERICAN IDOL at the
top of the queue.
What was so amazing?
The PVR actually recorded BOTH shows in their entirety, even though
they overlapped in time.
How could that be?!
My only guess is that with the two satellite feeds, the PVR was able
to record two separate channels simeoultaneously.
Is this possible?!
Thanks for your answers!

The HR10 has two tuners for satellite programming and two for ATSC (over the air HD). One of the main features of the box is that it can record two channels at once. You can even watch a pre-recorded show while it's recording the other two.
Edit: It's not amazing, it's TiVo!! :D

You're joking right?
This is what the unit was built to do. Record 2 things at the same time while you watch a 3rd.

That was quick. Thanks!
I am simply amazed! All this time I thought I'd have to fight
between two favorite shows.

to record them both!
Please excuse me for being amazed -- but I am. It's a feature
I never, ever expected. Really...I had no idea! The guy from DirecTV
only told me it would allow me to watch 1 channel while recording another.
I'm going to be very sorry to see the end of this Tivo unit.
I have been in contact with DirecTV and they are planning to
replace these units later this year. The replacements, from what
I understand, are not Tivo units but their own brand of PVR that
will work with their new MPEG4 coding.
Not happy about this. I love my Tivo, and from what I read, the
DirecTV PVRs are inferior.

If you don't need HD locals from DirecTV, the HR10-250 will work for a long time.
And, I guess the pages in the manual that mention the dual tuners are stuck together! :D

Jim,
Appreciate the sarcasm. Just consider me another born
genius who doesn't read the manuals.

There's another amazing feature you may not be aware of. This one is on your computer. You don't have to press the enter key every 40 characters, and the forum software will AUTOMATICALLY PUT THE CARRIAGE RETURNS IN FOR YOU! (You are not using a typewriter.)

If you seriously didn't know this, then you may also not know that while it is recording those two shows, you can watch another recorded show from the Now Playing list.

Boy do I wish the undelete program feature didn't just work for T60s, I would have loved to impress you with that one :)

Yeah, I do that too! When I got the HR10-250, I just connected it and that was it. However, for a few HD only things I had to crack the manual. Too bad most manuals these days are written by idiots. :) It would help if the index was more inclusive.

jeez, some of you guys are being rather hard on this guy. How many of us hook up new equipment and never read the manual only to find out things along the way? That seems to be the case with the author of this thread. He made a simple observation and you guys are really making him feel unwelcome. This is my first post here and I don't feel to welcome myself after reading some of these comments.

Welcome Wally, don't be alarmed at some of the comments. Sometimes we get in a weird mood. :) I've made my share of rude replies. And, I'm glad you said "some of you guys". :D
I might as well tell you guys about my experience with tivo, so you can laugh at me too ;D
I never had a dvr until 6 weeks ago when I got the hr10... I didnt realize until today I could search so easily for anything that I want to view and it will record any/all episodes that you want. There a bunch of sweet options that I didnt even know existed (like prioritizing certain shows for recording, keeping only a certain amount of shows, and a bunch of other stuff)
I had like 2 programs in my now playing list and nothing in my "To Do" list. I felt so empty before, but feel so special now. I am now feeling the power of tivo; and /me likes it.
Is the d* dvr jam packed with these features that I just discovered?
I liked my hr10 before, but now I love it.

Jim=rude? You'd have to show me a link :)

Even though I dont work for the company, I am curious in some research. What 'did' you think the tivo could do before you bought it? I definitely didn't know all the features before i bought it but i researched on this board a few months before buying it so had a pretty good ideas. Of course I research paperclips before I buy them :) Oh and if you dont know about SORT or the 30 second skip, let us know.
And as a newbie to hdtivo, heed this warning: watch your space! I forgot that HD stuff takes about 8x the space as SD stuff and after just a few weeks a bunch of old stuff got deleted because I didnt' know what i was doing :) I now have suggestions turned on as a way of monitoring space. (ask if you are interested)

My 10-250 started doing the same thing on thursday of this week. It was scheduled to record Without a Trace and ER but only recorded ER. When I checked the History it said that is did not record Without a Trace because there was no signal on the second tunner. I have check both tuners and they are both working properly. Last night it again failed to record two programms at the same time.

I knew I could record programming but I did not read my manual or go into the "pick programs to record" area of the menu. I was recording programs I saw on my guide but never typed in the title of a program and added it to my list. I didnt know it could record EVERY episode that was being broadcasted.
I had it in my head that it would only record a program that was on (for example) Thursday nights at 9pm. I like intervention on A&E, so it will record all programs no matter what time or day it is on.... awesome ;D
I read about sorting my programs but dont know exactly how to do it; i've heard of the 30 second skip but always use the FF feature. I'm assuming a 30 skip would be way better.
I'm really into the hardware end of things and never really sat down to learn what the box could really do.
As for space, I am deleting HD movies as soon as I watch them; I know they take up mad space.
I'm assuming the D* dvr has the same features but just works differently, is this right?
That was quick. Thanks!

The D* DVR's will still have two tuners so you will be able to record 2 programs at once. Not sure about other features, but I'm sure it will be very similar.

Something I just discovered last week,.. I was watching a movie and didn't have time to finish it, I hit "record" thinking it would start recording 30 minutes prior to the current time, which was fine, since I only wanted to pick up where I had left off.
The next day when I went to "now playing" to find my movie, it had recorded the entire thing, even though I had been over an hour and a half into it, well past the 30 minutes that it saves.
Anyone else know about this? If so, how did it do it?

Assuming it wasn't already recording this movie as a suggestion, then you stumbled on a rather haphazard feature - the current saved portion (the buffer) can actually be longer than 30 minutes depending on the past activity. You just got lucky (though I must admit I've never heard of picking up a whole hour and a half of buffer, which makes me believe my first theory is more likely).

I've had that happen to me and I was surprised as well. So far, it has only happened a few times and only if you have been watching the program since the beginning. I guess if the tuner has been continuously tuned to the channel the whole time it can work, at least some of the time.
