I have read several posts comparing DTV to Comcast and Verizon. I would like to know how many out there have tryed the new mpeg4 Dish (VIP622). I could only find one ex-DTV customer who has it but would like to hear from more about their experiences. Is it true that it has THREE tuners and ONE coax? Any bugs? In your opinion, is it better than the HDTivo?
Thank you for any input as Comcast and Verizon is NOT an option for many of us!

I am swapping out my HDTivo today for a VIP622. I can let you know how it is after a few days.

I have no experience with the 622, but the 522 was horrible.
If you didn't remember to shut it off at night, it would not update guide data.
It constantly stuttered and introduced digital artifacts on playback, particularly on use of "Instant Replay". It only operated like a 2 tuner box in "single mode" and it was challenging to reconcile the use of which tuner when -- you had to specify/select tuner when scheduling a recording.
Also, when I had it, it had no Season Pass functionality, but I hear they've added it too.
Incidentally, I expect Dish discussion is not welcome here -- I'd try dbstalk.com

Well at this point with the channel not available problem hitting me about 4 times a week I am ready to try something new. D* feeble HD lineup was also a factor.

Are you against choice? I use forums like this to help with product usage AS WELL AS for purchasing decisions. Without choice, can a consumer really make the best decision? I believe users of BOTH products being compared is MORE valuable to potential buyers than users of 'last-years' model. So let's keep it real. There are many current and prospective HDTivo owners who ARE curious!
I suppose that is why there is a 'Comcast Discussions' thread?????????????

I'm not -- but TiVo sponsors this forum and have requested that DirecTV Plus DVR (R15) discussions be redirected to dbstalk.com. (There used to be a sticky to this effect, but it has been unstuck.)
I'm assuming they'll demand the same for Dish discussions.
Comcast, on the other hand, is soon to be powered by TiVo, and thus, is not nearly as verboten.
Personally, I would think that open and honest discussions would IMPROVE TiVo, but they seem to prefer to not highlight their weaknesses on their own forum.
That having been said, the 522 was not horrible -- just not good. If Dish has significantly improved their platform since, I would imagine the 622 is a very good DVR.

I don't believe there is a Tivo unit specific to Comcast. The Tivo3 will have cablecard and thus will work with Comcast. I have only read about a Panasonic unit that "perhaps" will be Comcast-specific. Please share any info to the contrary. Thanks.

That sucks - maybe it's temporary as the box just came out. I'd suspect that as inventory increases, they would be more than happy to lease multiple units.

I'm sure if 500 users post that the VIP622 sucks - TIVO (and DTV) will be estatic!!!!!
How about we post and see. If it goes the other way you will read about "the mysterious disappearence of someone named Fastep......police are baffled!" There will also be black blotches covering any positive reference to the 622 as well as any negative references about Tivo.
I only wished I lived in a land where we had freedom of choice and speech.....
Hey....Wait a minute............?????????

Under the terms of the agreement, Comcast and TiVo will work together to develop a version of the TiVo service that will be made available on Comcast's current primary DVR platform. New software will be developed by TiVo and will be incorporated into Comcast's existing network platforms.

Sorry, I was confusing tivo3 as the "comcast tivo." Sounds like a different unit is in the works for Comcast people. Well I guess we'll see.
Thank you for the info.
