So I went to Best Buy today to purchase their 4 year service plan {which I was offered last week when I bought the unit(which was $100 for 4 years)} and I was told, to the surprise of the Home Theater Manager, that it is no longer offered. The Service plan for that unit.

Hmmmm... Is this because they know its being discountinued?

HA HA

This might be a first though. Someone at Best Buy refusing to sell the PSP. If the guy was right, there must be some reason why.

I work at Best Buy and the reason they don't offer service anymore is because after the first, we will be discontinuing the $200 rebate AND DTV is going to the lease model. They will still charge an upfront fee (I think $99 for High Def box and $499 for the HD DVR) and then DTV will charge a lease cost each month. After two years, DirecTV will change out your box to what is available at that time. I think DTV is making a HUGE error in doing this. You WON'T own the box even though you're paying for it up front......

Interesting...so this change doesn't affect your stock that you offer, just the prices and the fact that there is no more rebate? "Buy this now for $99, but you don't own it, and you're locked in for two years" Have fun with that one. Never mind the $499 HDTivo, that will be a laugh. "$500 up front, and you're leasing" This is a TV receiver, not a car!

Trust me...it sux!! I also will definitely be thinking about cable with this kind of crap coming from DTV!!! In the email to my super, they are "likening" it to leasing a car. Funny that you should put it that way! I think it is a BAD move and the bean counters are going to lose a LOT of subs this way....

The big problem is the $499 up-front cost. Who's going to pay that?
Comcast has $0 up-front.
E* has $299 up-front and that's ridiculous also.

We will find out tomorrow who will pay :)

Seriously, has the cable industry placed moles in higher up postions at D* in order to run it into the ground? Every day it seems they make worse & worse decisions.

I plan on using my HR10-250 with OTA until it dies. And at that time, I'm without a doubt going with Comcast rather than 'lease' their non-Tivo DVR for the same upfront price I paid to outright own the Tivo one.

Wow. D* just continues to excel in bad morale.

Amazing.

hey just wait until they launch the countermeasure that only affects hdtivos and forces us all do directv dvrsThis is my biggest fear. I have an R15 POS DVR that is relagated to my kids bedroom. He's 12 and a gamer and the UI is such a disaster he won't use it. Can you imagine paying $499 for the HD version and it is only slightly more functional than a VCR? I plan on taking care of my HDTivos and hopefully the countermeasure for the HR10-250 won't happen.
