setup/dialing problem

i am trying to do the initial setup on my tivo series 2 dvr. i have connected all of the cables and powered it on. it wil go through the powering up screen but then it goes to a black screen that says "connecting to server", then in a few seconds it will say"failed bad connection". this is as far as it will go no matter what i do. i have checked to see if the phone line is functioning properly by pluging a phone into it and the phone works fine. i have powercycle it several times but i can't get any further than the black screen that tells me "failed bad connection". i noticed that the tivo website suggest trying to change the dailing settings but i cant get to any screen to do that. so what do i need to do?

That's not a normal bootup, it is not normal to go right from boot into trying to connect to the server. There should be a welcome screen and several setup screens before it makes the first attempt.

Is this is new unit, not used?
