We may be moving next year. We currently have TiVo with DirecTV but it seems that some of the new features are not available with DirecTV units.

One of our original units has the paid lifetime subscription.

What are the advantages of the "regular" new TiVo models over DirecTV ones?

Also, could we keep the lifetime subscription or is it tied to our original unit? If so, can we sell that on Ebay legitimately? (Will it work to transfer the subscription? If so, how to unlink from our name/credit?)

The lifetime subscription on your DirecTV TiVo is tied to your DirecTV account and is not transferrable to a standalone TiVo.

The main advantages of the standalone TiVos are the TiVo-specific networking features. Depending on the DirecTV model you have, you can enable similar and sometimes better features with a bit of work. You will lose dual tuners and lossless recording of the satellite bitstream.

With Standalones, you can use them with any provider, provided you are willing to give up direct digital recording and dual tuners, unless you are willing to hold out for a Series 3, which will do direct digital dual tuners for antenna and/or cable only
