Argh!!! This is killing me. Just got my TiVo and waiting for the initial download. I hope it dosn't take too long. I want to watch TiVo before going to bed tonight. Definitely takes longer to setup than a vcr, but I'm sure it'll be worth it in the end, right?? :)

Right.
Are you still waiting? I had to rerun guided setup recently and was surprised how quickly guide information was available (compared to a few years ago.)

Yup, still waiting. Woke up this morning and nothing changed. Hmmm.. Maybe I'll pick another phone number when I get home and try that. It still hasn't even changed my time yet, or any other info about the user. Argh!!

OK, I'm confused about where you are in the setup process.
Can you tell us exactly what you've done so far?

Maybe I missed a step. This is a used TiVo from a friend. He hasn't used it since August. When I turned it on it just told me that the last update was past 30 days so I had to go to TiVo Central and make a connection. I setup my local phone number and told TiVo to dial it and it was doing some downloads (so the screen said), but hasn't updated anything yet. Maybe I need to do the refresh/reset option and then try again? It still shows his info and the account closed as of August even though I went online and activated a subscription for it last night.

It's possible the downloads were for a new version of the software. What does System Information show for software version? What is the status shown? "Pending restart" means you have a new version of software to install...the quickest way to do that is to turn off/on the TiVo to let it know it can install (otherwise it will wait until 2am).
What does it say about account status? And what model TiVo is it?

It is a series 2, 40 hour model. I'm not sure the model number but the ID code begins with 240 if that means anything (I'm not at home now). The version was 7.1xxx. Where will I see the Status message, I'll check that when I get home.
Thanks for the help. I can't wait till it gets working. I was hoping to TiVo Lost tonight, but I guess I'll have to tape it once more.... Argh!!! lol

How do you turn on/off the TiVo ? Is there an on/off button the remote ?
I feel so silly I've been unplugging the AC , waiting a few seconds and plugging it back in to restart it.

I don't think there is an off button on mine. I'm assuming you just unplug it for a minute or so then plug it back in. There is also a setting which I'm not sure what it does in the setup screen that says reset or restart (I don't have it in front of me right now).

No, that's fine, unless AC=Air Conditioning.
No on/off switch. There is a "Restart the Recorder" option that does the same thing, essentially.

What do I need to do to get to the guided setup? I didn't get this option when I turned on my TiVo for the first time. Remember mine was used previously, so it wasn't "New Out of the Box".

I'm away from my TiVo...oh, but I've got an old TiVo manual here...
Under Restart/Reset System (may have a slightly different name now) there is a Repeat Guided Setup step.
But before you do that...did your friend live nearby with the same cable (or whatever input) setup you are using? If so, this may not be necessary.
Make sure your account status and (possible) software install issues are OK first.

Nope, my friend lived in California and I'm in Virginia. I'll do the Repeat guided setup from that menu when I get home tonight and report back what happens. Thanks again for all the help.

beejay,
Thanks for all the help. I ran the reboot from the menu, which loaded new software (I think it had something to do with the overlap protection, haven't really looking into exactly what that is yet). Then I went down to the guided setup and it connected a couple times and I got my cable lineup and all is well. Then I spent a while online getting my season passes setup. TiVo is COOL!
