My understanding was that you cannot "network" a series 1 tivo with a series 2 tivo, that there is an encoding issue that prevents this...

BUT

(as I understood it), you can transfer shows from the old series 1 unit to the new series 2 unit -- IF you use analog cables and do it in realtime.

This made sense to me, since, of course, I would want to be able to use the tivo DVD burner to burn shows from other devices, sometimes (e.g. old stuff recorded onto a VCR tape, that I want to transfer to DVD.

In other words, I assumed that any analog device with yellow, white and red outputs, could be hooked up to the tivo's yellow, white and red inputs, and transfer shows that way.

****

The tivo tech support phone service just told me that I cannot do this.

BUT they kept referring to NETWORKING TIVOS. I kept emphasizing that I wanted to transfer shows from other devices (tivo hd or vcr player) using the analog cables, but she said this can't be done.

BUT, she might have had "tivo networking" on the brain, unable to see the difference between that and what I was asking.

*****

Can anyone confirm:
(1) Can I burn shows from a VCR to the tivo DVD, using the yellow, white and red analog cables/connectors? (in real time)
(2) Can I "record" analog output from the old series 1 tivo (using the analog yellow, white and red cables) to the new tivo hard drive? (in real time)

thanks!

I haven't done it but it should be possible. The only issue may be if you have protected content on the series 1. Those shows may not record. My series1 let's me record movies from my DVD player but it "remembers" that there was a copy preotection on the original recording and it "preserves" the copy protection.

I have recently gotten an RS-TX20 and have a an S1 as well. I will try it and report back if works. The cool thing about the RS is that it let's you manually record from front-side video ports and also enter a name for the recording. It also has a firewire port for camcorders. If it provided a video editting function with simple cuts, splits and joins it would be the ultimate video device.

BTW, if you're going to do this, spend the extra money for an Svideo cable as it will do a much better job at preserving video quality.

If you connect the A/V out from one TiVo to the A/V in on another, yes, you can 'record' the content again on the new TiVo by playing it on the old one.
