I have 2 Tivo's networked but have just noticed that I cannot get access to both at the same time. I was hoping to view Tivoweb on both so that I can check on duplicate programmes recorded. I ran nic_config_tivo on both and noticed that both have the same mac address should that matter.

Almost certainly that is the problem. MAC addresses are supposed to be unique. Go back into nic_config_tivo, and it should allow you to change it to anything you like (well, it needs to be pairs of hexadecimal numbers!)
As long as there is at least 1 character difference from the other Tivo's address you should be fine.

The MAC addresses should be different.
Run nic_config_tivo again and choose option 1
[Edit] Doh! Too Slow!

Perhaps the real question is how did they get duplicate mac's in the first place? Unless you are running a nic that allows "soft" mac addresses....

IIRC the install program for the cachecard drivers sets the MAC address. So using the same install program for 2 Tivo's and choosing the defaults each time means it would get the same address...

As I understand it the Network cards in tivo have a Software Mac address. They are all the same from the same driver, you just have to alter one if you are using them on he same network.
