Hey guy's

Ok I am new to this, I have aquired a philips hdr212 tivo.
It seems to work, will run the demo.

What I want to do is run this as a standalone recorder.
I am using an fta reciever with a 9' birdview dish.
I receive channels from many sat's, some c band some
ku band. My dish mover is not automatic, i have to move
the dish with a seperate control unit.

Is there any way I can do this, or is this thing just
another door stop. I have heard that series 1 can be
made to stand alone.

Any help appreciated.

The term "stand alone" means a machine that doesn't need to be connected to anything else, for example, a satellite receiver.

TiVos come with their own TV tuners, and the unit you seem to have will be able to, on its own, receive over the air TV, and unscrambled analogue cable channels.

It can also be used with a variety of cable boxes and satellite receivers.

Going thru setup you tell it your type of service, and what type of box you have.

It'll make the adjustments so that it can control your box or receiver.

Note-
Not all are covered, obviously. There could always be something new invented the TiVo has no control data for.

From the sound of things, your receiver probably isn't the type of receiver the TiVo would have control data on, but you MAY still be able to get it to work.

You might be able to "trick" your machine into thinking it's working with one kind of box, when it's actually working with something else entirely. This would mean it wouldn't be able to change the channels on your box....that's something you'd have to do on your own, but it might still be able to record the signal.

How does your satellite receiver send a signal to your TV? By way of antenna cable thru channel 3 or 4, or by way of Audio/Video lines?

"Standalone" in the context of TiVo, is one that can be used with any source, in that it is just a DVR. The term is used to differentiate form the DirecTV TiVos, which are DirecTV receivers with a built in TiVo DVR, or a TiVo with DirecTV tuners, depending on how you look at things (although the either should not be interpreted as the TiVo portion being a full standalone DVR).

Hey Guy's

My receiver is a Coolsat 4000Pro.
I have read on FTA forums that Tivo's do not
have the ir code for the Coolsat receiver.

The Coolsat has both channel 3 and a/v outputs,
also has s-video out and has a pass thru for ant input.

My dish positioner is a seperate unit, not controlled
by the receiver. I have to point the dish to the
sat I want to receive then tune the receiver to that
sat.

A Tivo sub will not do me any good, so how do I make
it work with out a sub?
