View Full Version : Most inaccurate Series 3 article ever?

Give this article (http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=845&ref=ya) a read. Not only does it spread incredible misinformation, but the fact that it is so short almost assures it of the title of highest-density-of-inaccuracy ever achieved in a two-paragraph story.

I love how "Engadget is reporting that TiVo is now in beta," when in fact, Engadget is reporting that Thomas Hawk is reporting that he thinks it might be happening and E. S. Mack didn't deny it.
"CableCARD lets you grab high definition content over the air?"
"Earlier t his year TiVo CEO Mike Ramsey said that customers can expect the new box to show up "early" in 2006?" WTF? This couldn't be more wrong if it tried.
"TiVo is currently also working on launching a new service it is dubbing Tahiti, which will connect users on the go with their TiVo content sitting at home." Really? Zatz, why haven't you reported on this? (Hell, it might even be true, but where did they get it?)

I saw dt_dc's post in the other thread first, and replied there.

Yeah, "Tahiti." But what they're talking about sounds like Slingbox or something approximating it. TiVo may be doing that, but I haven't heard about it.

Unless Tahiti makes me expresso drinks, I'm not interested in reporting it.

Seriously, the DailyTech dude who wrote the article obviously doesn't follow TiVo closey which is how he managed to confuse it all. (Now you see why I started a blog, HDTiVo?) It also reminds me of that whole rumor game teachers or camp counselors have kids play where someone whispers something into one persons ear which repeats... by the time it's crossed the room and gone through several people the story is entirely different. (Oops, just read Stephen's comment where he said that very same thing.)

Stephen, if you ever want to get a message directly to the editors of Engadget or a specific writer drop me a line and I'll take care of it. No guarantee they'll do anything with it ;) but I'll pass the message along. They get so much traffic, you might not be heard in the comments.

As I said before I thought the interesting parts of Thomas Hawk's article had to do with the poison pill and the netflix reference. Of course any new hardware or software would be undergoing testing... doesn't seem like news to me, unless there's a signup page online. :D

I don't think I've come across DailyTech before... other than this gaffe, should I be readng them?

Thanks Dave. The DailyTech editor called me immediately after I submitted my comment, and we had a quick and good conversation where he apologized for not editing the article more closely. As for their content, I'll give them a read for a week or two at least and then let you know.

The Engadget comment I posted didn't seem to pass moderation. :) I'll take you up on their editor contact e-mail address.

When you comment on Engadget it emails you and you have to verify the comment from the link in the email before it appears - but once you do that it should show up immediately, they don't actually moderate the comments.,

This is the first thing that crossed my mind too at the beginning of the thread - its called Telephone. Now do you see why I'm skeptical of the Blog/Journalism Cabal? :) Look what happens. Look how its getting nailed right here in a Forum.

I read some of your Blog today. Its good.

Hmm, I seem to remember not too long ago a certain TiVo-focused blogger inadvertently started a rumor that TiVo had teamed up with DirecTV and DISH to provide portable media players. Now what was that guy's name...? :D

The pill has been around for some time, but it only prevents a hostile takeover. The Netflix comment was encouraging.

Dunno. This was my first experience with them, too. Google found it. Based on that article, I won't be rushing back to the site.

Oh Please!!!! Stop it EVERYONE with the frickin' Netflix comment!!!!

Good...don't let a POS article cause readership to explode.

The difference is *I knew* what I was talking about even if no one else did... ;) It was educational though to see how a figure of speech could be taken literally (DirecTV is joining TiVo and Dish in the portable media market.) Only one site/writer seemed to misunderstand and come to the wrong conclusion - I did contact them but they didn't update the article.

Now do you see why I'm skeptical of the Blog/Journalism Cabal? :) Look what happens. Look how its getting nailed right here in a Forum.

It is getting addressed here in the forum... BUT how many TiVo owners are regulars here? And of those who are, which are choosing to read this thread in this section (Happy Hour seems to get the most traffic). It's likely casual fans would only see the tainted message.

Thanks for the positive review. :)

Another job for HME...

And again I'll respond that HME is another niche that most folks (percentage wise) don't explore... ;) For the moment, DirecTV TiVo boxes would also be excluded. I wonder how many people who might want to hear the occasional TiVo news blurb don't own units?

Thanks Megazone. The confirmation e-mail was caught in my spam filter. My comment is posted now.
And what a comment it was. For those of you who haven't seen it, it contains the usual "I can't confirm or deny..." bit, then follows with this (response to another comment):

As for satellite support: Please note that there are no consumer grade real-time HD encoders/decoders that would work with the analog HD signal from the satellite box that available at a reasonable price. If the Series3 unit could gain access to the satellite digital HD signal that's one thing, but it cannot do real-time encoding of an analog HD feed (and nor can any other HD DVR). The only alternatives are to build an integrated box (which gets the digital signal and decodes it to analog) or CableCard.
Stephen/Nova: This is the kind of thing that it would be good to post on the blog. Have Nova run around the blogscape and read the articles and comments on the Series 3, then compile a list of common questions, misconceptions, criticisms, etc., which you could answer on the blog (at least the ones, like this, that you can answer).

And I already have an RSS feed from Google Blog Search (http://tivo_in_blogs.livejournal.com/) they can use to find any mentions of TiVo.
