View Full Version : Moving recordings from HDVR2 to DVR80?

My HDVR2 has died. It seems as though something on the motherboard is shorting out the supply as the power light will not even turn on yet the voltages of the supply are O.K. when motherboard not connected.

Anyway, I gave Robert a ring at Value Electronics and he is hooking me up with a DVR80 as I do not think my wife would like a non TIVO unit. I understand that this box is almost identical to my HDVR2.

We have probably a hundred hours or more (300gb) of shows that we would like to save form the old unit. I am assuming that the image though is likely not compatible with the new unit. Is there a way then that we can save them perhaps to another hard drive and then recover them either to a computer, or preferably to the new unit? It seems like there was an application that did something like this a while back.

Much Thanks,

Ken

HDVR2 and DVR80 are both Series 2 units, they use the same operating system and file format.

I'm no expert at the hacking / extraction / injection, but I think the encryption for the saved shows is based on each machine's serial number. I don't think you can just move the files over and hope they still work. There probably is a solution, but I'm guessing it will involve a significant amount of PC work as I think you have to decyrpt the show files if you didn't disable encryption long ago.

If you move the 300gig drive to the DVR80, you will most likely get the hardware problem nag when going to the 'now playing list'. The only solution there is a 'clear and delete everything' which is not what you are looking for. Download the programs to a PC (long and tedious) or to a DVD recorder. Some DVD recorders come with a hard drive also. Someone else here may have some better advice too.

My original TIVO is dead and so I can not just play and capture the shows.

I have a HTPC connected to my projector and this would be a viable solution to watch these shows up there. Is there a software utility that will extract them from the TIVO image that is on the drive into a useful format that I can play (MPEG4?)

Thanks

nope sorry there isn't.
IF this unit had been hacked and "superpatched' you could just swap drives from unit to unit, sadly, you're stuck.
UNLESS (and someone PLEASE verify this works) you hack the drive, with the zipper (http://mastersav.com/tivo_zipper.html) then run 51killer.tcl the shows MIGHT play on the new unit.

Nope. Won't work -- I just tried it with my dead HDVR2, by putting the drives in my other HDVR2, zippering it, and running 51killer. If somebody figures out a way, let me know. I'm a few episodes behind on Alias!
