View Full Version : Horizontal bars on ABC

Lately I have been seeing horizontal bars on my ABC channel. They used to be faint to where I only noticed them in dark scenes, but now they are getting worse. It was awful during LOST tonight. I don't think it is my receiver, because it's only the one channel and I've swapped receivers recently and had the same problem on both. Does anyone else see this on ABC?

Anyone know what DirecTV might have me do to troubleshoot it, so I can try it before calling?

Rolling horizontal bars are usually an ungrounded connection. I'm not sure why they would only be on one channel, however.

What market are you in?

I'm in N Central FL and we get the Orlando locals. ABC is OR9. I see the other guy who replied with this problem is in FL too. I have an installer scheduled for the 27th from the DVR4ME offer, so maybe I can have them do something about it then if it's a grounding issue.

its only ABC, and all other channels are fine. This would indicate to me that if its a grounding issue, its on the station's end. Maybe I should send an installer over there, I think the time would be better spent. :) :)

NET114: Do you get the Orlando locals too? I'm planning to call them about this tomorrow. I can't watch Lost with those ugly bars again.

I'm seeing it too on the Orlando ABC channel.

Clearly, if all of you people getting the problem are in the Orlando market, it is the source and not your equipment.

It might even be the source channel itself and the problem might be coming in prior to Directv's getting the signal. How does it look on a friend's local cable or over the air?

Called and spoke to someone DirecTV today. She said the problem had already been reported and they're working on it. If it was someone here that reported it… thanks!

I didn't noticed the lines this morning, so maybe it's already been fixed.

I had the bars on my Orlando feed during LOST as well. It wasn't just you! I also saw them last night when I turned over to my wife's DTiVo and it was on the FIT-TV channel.

I had this problem b/c my local nbc channel is channel 3. I was told that my tv was getting "off-air" interferance. When i switched my reciever to channel 4 and then used channel 4 as my input, I haven't had this problem. So if your local channel is broadcasting on either 3 or 4 switch your reciever to the opposite. TRY THAT!

Imagine MY frustration when I had just completed the install of a whole house video network with mini-high res cables throughout and my new Extron matrix switcher only to power up the TV, select LOST from Now Playing, and see horizontal black bars scrolling up the screen!

I didn't see the bars yesterday but they were back again tonight. :-/

Rizz: My hookups use Input 1, not channel 3 or 4. It's been so long since I tuned in a OTA channel I wouldn't even remember how. ;-)

The horizontal bars seen on WFTV-TV (Ch 9, ABC) are visible only off DirecTV. I reported the problem to DirecTV several weeks ago, but they didn't have anyone that could understand what I was describing.

Last week I spoke to the Chief Engineer at WFTV and described the problem to him. It is only on DirecTV feed. It is not on the local analog off-air signal nor the station's DTV off-air signal.

He explained they had recently relocated some equipment and that was possibly the cause. He said he would investigate.

A week later it is still there, and possibly worse than before, especially on dark scenes (low APL).

I suggest that the problem is not a network problem but an affiliate problem somewhere between their reception of ABC feeds and DirecTV's downlink of their signal.

The more folks who call DirecTV and WFTV about the problem the more likely it is to be fixed. At the time I first called I was told no one else had reported it, but it is visible on a number of DirecTV systems I have seen. Does anyone out there see the problem on Dish network? If so, that should help pinpoint the problem. If not, it seems more like a DirecTV problem. I don't have cable so don't know if it appears there or not, but that would be from their analog off-air feed.

Chalk me up as another Orlando ABC channel 9 viewer with the scrolling bars. It was really bad the other night on Lost and then it seemed to go away. But, just minutes ago I noticed them on a black screen between a commercial and regular program. So, don't think it's fixed yet.

Haven't noticed on any other channel. We use S-Video cable from DirecTivo to the TV so can't possibly be channel 3/4 interference as one poster described.

I'll complain too - oh what fun that is

You haven't really had fun until you talk to Tech Support and tell them what you see on a waveform monitor and they have no idea what you're talking about or who to turn you over to. Only a promise that they will research your problem and contact you.

Still waiting!
