View Full Version : Upgrades... Series 2 to r10... Help I'm lost

OK I'm not totally lost. I'm just a few years behind. A few years ago I added a 120GB disk to a series 2 (7000?) 40GB directv DVR. Things have run fairly well till the unit started locking up. Sometimes a blank screen, sometimes a frozen picture.
I called directv and they just sent me a replacement unit. It's an R10.
Is this good or bad or doesn't matter? Should I swap the R10 for a series 2? I would like to attach my dvr to my network.... someday.
If the R10 is OK, I would like to move my 120 GB disk from the old unit to the new R10, (preserving my content) and then add the "new" 80GB drive that the unit came with as a second disk. Does this make sense? Any issues? Does the information in the "Hinsdale how to" apply to the R10? It seems rather old.
I'd like to start saving the content unencrypted so I can share it with my computer. Is this still possible/legal?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello. I can't help you with the legality issue as I am fuzzy on that myself (not that I will be probably much of a help with anything else). If I had to guess though, I would say it is legal as long as you aren't selling copies to others as it would be a personal backup. Until someone more knowledgable comes on, I will do my best to help.
I only have a R10 so I can not compare it to a series 2 unit but from what I have heard, I believe the R10 is supposed to be a little bit fuzzier than the series 2 but running slightly faster. Adding the hard drive should not be a problem but I don't know about being able to preserve its content as I have never done that before. You can't hack a R10 (well you can but it involves soldering I am told) so you won't be able to network it to your computer. I read somewhere that Directv may be coming out with an upgrade that will allow this but don't know when, if ever.
I guess if you want the ability to network it, it would probably be safer to get a series 2 unless you have enough faith in Directv to not only allow their units to do this but also do it for R10 units and not newer ones down the road.

I can only help with one thing sorry. It's perfectly fine to take the S vid out the back and transfer to your PC. I think it's when you sell copies of movies etc on ebay that they get mad.
edit..actually 2 things..you can't just take a hard drive from one tivo and put it in another and watch the shows..sorry

R10 is not hackable (w/o PROM soldering). You can expand the hard drive.
It is illegal to transfer over network or record unencypted (violation of DMCA), but have not heard of any prosecutions yet. The "other forum" has the SW.

What "other forum" are you referring to?

Current easiest method for hacking non-R10 Series 2 DTivos is the Zipper method (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=265929).
Once hacked, you get lots of goodies. You can also add on the tools that "cannot be discussed here". More than one hacked DTivo and you can do box-to-box transfers of recordings, aka MRV - MultiRoom Viewing.

Sorry for the ignorance, but being new here, where can I discuss the thngs that "cannot be discussed here"?
Thanks!

Do a google search for Tivo Database Deal and you should find a place to discuss things...
Reading the Zipper thread in the Underground forum can also reveal lots of things and places to look...

Hey, I have this R10 model myself. I think it holds 80 hours of storage. Does anyone know for sure?
Also, when is Tivo going to get with the program and allow users an easy option to check available storage??!!! :(

Turn on Suggestions... If you have suggestions recording you have an indicator for how much space you still have on your HD... With the 6.2 software and the ability to have folders, all of your suggestions are in a single folder (so not cluttering things up) with a count out to the side. Since TiVo tries to fill the HD with suggestions, it starts working like a space indicating. Sure its not elegant, but it works ;) .
The other is to hack your TiVo (but not without a prom change for the R10, sorry) and then you can use TiVoWebplus to get space management information.
