View Full Version : HR10-250 & OTA --- record two local channel (HD) programs?
All:
I have a question for those that are knowledgeable:
If I set up my HR10-250 & utilize OTA along with both satellite inputs, can I record two local channel (HD) programs being shown at the same time in HD?
I’m curious because I am wondering if the sat. rcvr. Would need two OTA inputs to handle this or not...
Thanks much,
Kevin

As long as you set it up to use two sat inputs, then yes, you can record two OTA programs at the same time. The OTA signal is split internally.

Why should this effect OTA recording?
It will work whether you have one OR two sat inputs.

Yes, but will these OTA recordings be two local channel HD programs?

Unless you tell it you have 2 sat inputs, it will only be able to record 1 OTA recording at a time.

Really? I did not know that - my bad.

It is a littel counter intuitive as far as the number of tuners do to the way the system was set up based off the original Series 2 hardware, which had just 2 Sat tuners. Essentially the HR10-250 has 2 virtual tuners. Each can tune a Sat or OTA source but must have satellite active in order to function at all.

for anyone asking "why can't HDtivo record 4 things if they have 4 tuners?"...here's the answer

As a follow-up, I just purchased two new HR10-250 models, and I want to add the OTA capability for HD locals.
I own an Eagle Aspen 5x8 multiswitch and am wondering how many RG6 cable runs I'll need to add to this system, both from the antenna to the two TVs and/or to the multiswitch first.
Should I run one RG6 cable from the antenna to a splitter and then two outs to the TVs or utilize the multiswitch? If so, then how shall I integrate it?
I appreciate the input.
Thanks,
Kevin

Well it all depends on how ez it is to do cable runs etc. The absolute ideal would be an OTA run right to the back of the tivos (not sure if they are stacked or in different rooms so obviously somewhere you'd need a splitter/amp). Or you can run the single OTA to the 5x8 then at the back of each tivo you'd have a diplexor that would separate the OTA from the satellite signal. This is how I have my setup. However note in the future, if you ever get mpeg4, you can't use diplexors for OTA with the new dish or new M/S.
do you have other receivers? if you only have 2 HDtivos, you techincally dont need the M/S as you just need 2 cables going from the dish to each tivo.
post back with any more info you have/need.
newsposter,
The two HR10-250 receivers are each in different rooms. I could fairly easily run the OTA lines to each receiver, but I could also do the diplexor as well.
I also have one working HDVR2 which will be in its own room as well.
Now I am wondering what kind of antenna to get; additionally, will I connect the two cables to the antenna or just one and then split it off?
Thanks,
Kevin

When you record two OTA HD programs at the same time, the HR10-250's GUI becomes even slower! Double bonus!
