A guy at work has DirecTV in his apartment and is interested in getting a Tivo. He has a D10 and he doesn't know if his setup is a stacked setup or not. Can the D10 destack a signal? I'm trying to figure out if he needs a destacker or if he just has a single standard run into his apartment

I'm not sure if the D10 has an internal destacker. The current "new" receiver is the D11, and it does inlcude an internal destacker. However, both the D10 and D11 are standard recievers, not dvrs.
The R10 is a dvr. I don't know if it has a destacker. The R15 is a dvr and does have a destacker.

Yes, I know the differences between the D10, R10, R15, etc. He's interested in hacking his tivo, so I am going to get him sold on a DVR40 or DVR80 if he is able to get one. If he's on a stacked setup then its probably going to be cost prohibitive for him to do so. If its not a stacked setup he's only going to be able to use one tuner so he may not get one in that case either. Right now I'm just trying to figure out his setup to give him options.

No DirecTivo has a built in Destacker.
He would require an external Destacker... which would run between $200 and $300

If he has a D10 and one cable run, he's not stacked. But if it IS a stacked system, he has a destacker, so it won't be cost-prohibitive for him to change receivers.
As for using more than one tuner...can you multiswitch a stacked/destacked signal?

On what planet is a destacker $200-300?
$69.50 at 9thtee.com (http://www.9thtee.com/dssstuff.htm) plus a $30 2x4 multiswitch plus $10 for a high-frequency splitter. All told, $110 for one or two DirecTiVos.

Will the D11 and R15 destackers work with "standard" destackers, as you would find in an MDU installation? I thought the destackers in these units were for the AT9 multi-stacked signal (which does not use "standard" stacking techniques).

The R15 Destackers do work in MDU installations... There have been a couple posts of successfull usage of the R15 and it's built in destacker.
As for the $300-$400...
My appologizes... that is the number I have stuck in my head for the "total" solution... (aka if you needed a stacker too)
Thank you for the correction.
