View Full Version : New Software Updates for Older Models?

When I was talking to a Service rep at D* he mentioned that he had a notice that some of the older model D* with tivo units were going to get an upgrade to allow more Active features sometime in the summer of 06. He did not have specific models but I was wondering if anyone here had heard about this or if there is already a discussion going on about it. I tired to search and didnt't see any.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

This is news to me. I won't hold my breath. :)

Directv service reps are more in the dark than most of us if that tells you anything.

Remember that the CSR's did not even know about the DVR4ME Promo

But.... it would be very SMART of them! :-)

Smart for us, maybe, but not for them - and certainly not in their interest to send out upgrades for "obsolete" equipment. When was the last UTV upgrade?

I would seriously doubt we'll be seeing any more upgrades for the TiVo based equipment.

Smart for Humanity! Then again all their programmers are probably working on R15 issues. (discovering fire and inventing the wheel all over again)

Quoted for truth, but edited. It's a fact -- not an assumption.

(Love how this copy of vB has no strikethrough.)

That's funny!

I don't mind change..change is good. But once I uncovered what the TIVO can do (MRV, HMO, remote scheduling, etc) it really hit me...like WOW..this stuff is amazing..already there in the software and Directv says NO lets START over! As a consumer it just makes me upset. Directv wants to make lots of money but common CENTS (common sense) appears to be lacking.

Well, I don't say this to void your argument, as I generally agree with it. --But FYI, the last UTV update was LOOOOONG after they discontinued the product, and well into DirecTiVo's life cycle. --Not so long ago. And it added quite a few nice features.

I didn't know that, Ricky. Thanks for putting me straight.

There is one big difference here, though. There was no comptetition from UTV (MSNTV anyone?), whereas TiVo is a spurned contractor with a competing technology (T3).

Is there a place we can go and bet on these rumors? Gotta be some money in this somewhere.

You are right. That's why I found it curious that D* not only allowed, but heavily promoted the 6.2 upgrade for Tivo, which took place just as they were beginning to phase out their relationship.

I'm betting 6.3

Removes 30 second skip.

Permanently disables the USB ports.

Blocks all holes that have been exploited to turn on HMO/HME/MRV etc.

Gives it all the cool features the R15 has! (Different Interface, recordings that may or may not work, single buffer.)

:)

Have you tried contacting Wayne Gretzky's wife? :p

It doesn't. I think you are wrong misinformed. :)

The strike through code is [ s] [ /s], not [ strike] [ /strike].

Funny thing is...when the installer came out on Saturday, he had a couple of HR10s on board. D* had actually CUT OFF the TiVo logo from the box and told him that it had to be sold that way!

Weird. The HR10-250's are still being sold at BB with the tivo logos on the box.

Thanks for all of the replies. If anyone is willing to call and ask about this I'd be interested in hearing how many different replies we get. Might be fun. I'll even call again.

Whisper mode, don't wish too much for new software of the sort described by spacemanspiff, you could have a unit equivalent to a Dishplayer. NO NO, it was the Dishplayer upgraded by Dish that sent me to DirecTV. I love the DTiVo boxes.

I bought my HR10-250 at Best Buy in December. As of yesterday, they still have 3 more on the shelf, black box with "DirecTV HD DVR" in blue letters. Large white DirecTV logo and almost as large TiVo logo. There are even TiVo screenshots on the box. It's not in the current Best Buy advertisment, but it was about 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Software upgrades for older models would be surprising, but not impossible. Maybe it's some old plan that's been on the back burner for a long time. Maybe, just maybe, there are a few engineers and/or managers that are thinking of the content MPEG-2 users. The big question is, why would they gamble with a software upgrade when the existing software "just works"? I could only see them upgrading the software if there are significant bugs they are aware of...

I don't think they see the HR10-250 slowness as a bug, otherwise they would have fixed that long time ago, especially considering the price of that beast.
