I made the dumb mistake of taking my HD out of my Directv DVR D10 and put it in a USB HD enclosure hoping that I could dump the files to my computer. My system would not recognize the disk.....it showed up under computer management....but no partitions....at this point if figured it was a different format and just said oh well, took it out and replaced it in my DVR.....Now when I start it, it says powering up, then the screen goes white and won't do anything....is there anything I can do to salvage this w/o having to buy a new DVR or HD? Please let me know!!!!

Thanks
Jake

Did you boot it up in Windows XP? If so, not a good thing... Tivo drives and XP don't get along.

Do a search on maketivobootable to find some info on the issue. That program may be able to help you out.

what exactly does MakeTivoBootable do? Can you use this program to setup a brand new drive without having to restore an image of the factory installed drive?

It does what it says, make a Tivo drive bootable. Which would have to be done if you booted up you pc into WinXP with the Tivo drive attached. WinXP marks the drive thus making it "unbootable" in the Tivo. Which sounds like what the OP did.

MTB simply replaces the handful of bytes hosed by the Windows boot (The TiVo bootsector). The TiVo drive still needs an OS to boot into.
