I'm trying to do an upgrade for the first time and I must be doing something extremely wrong because I cannot even go past the first step.
I downloaded the .iso files for the MFSTools and burned it on a CD. However, I cannot boot from this CD.
So my question is, is it really necessary to backup and restore the TIVO factory installed drive? Is the OS only found on the original TIVO drive or can I get this somewhere else?

Did you just burn the .iso file to the CD?
You must do a "burn image" or similar command in your CD burning software for it to unpack and burn correctly.

It is recommended that you backup the original drive image and then restore that image to another drive. This way your original drive is untouched in case you do something wrong. It also gives you a good image in case your hacked drive dies at some point. Think of it as insurance.
After you know what you are doing, you can hack the original drive if you add other Tivos. You;ll always have the first drive as a backup.
Like Maharg18 said, burn the files as an iso image. It should be an option in your CD burning software.

If you really want to go the easy route, buy an InstantCake image from ptvupgrade.com and use that to upgrade. Or the easiest route of all is to buy a pre-formatted drive from them or weaknees.com.

thanks guys! I missed the part that I was suppose to burn it as an iso "image". Finally got a bootable CD. Now on to the fun part....!
