I have a DirecTivo R10 (all hackable features crippled), but want to hook my Tivo into my home network for all of the features that will give me (Webtogo, pictures on my tv, port movies to computer, etc.).

I am well aware that the R10 cannot be hacked to do any of this.

What could I accomplish by purchasing an old HDVR10? Would I be able to hook it somehow to my existing R10, but us it as a network portal?

Will it be able to do anything with it without paying a monthly service fee? Will I be able to pay a monthly service fee and get full function?

you can't use the HDVR2 to gain access to the R10
You CAN however just replace that R10 with an HDVR2 :p

Thanks, that's kind of what I thought.

How about this? Could I hook up the old HDVR2 to my system as a separate source (like another component) to my TV and surround receiver, network it to my router, and then use it solely as a way to put my computer's content on my screen (photos, songs, movies from pc, etc.) Since I am a Tivo subscriber (through DirecTV), would I avoid paying an additional monthly fee?

I'm starting to think an old networked Tivo box may be the cheapest way to have "media pc" functionality for the time being. I just wouldn't be able to capture my tv programs onto my network.

a modded X Box would be just slightly more money and much more feature packed.

Cool. I have an Xbox that I barely play anymore. Got any sites or thread links that discuss how to proceed on this idea?

You can google for "xbox scene" and be sure to check out xbmc, (xbox media center).

The forums over there are a great resource and will have everything you need, informational-wise.

Done. It's strange the way your mind can arrive at what is really needed by incremental steps. I'm going to put a hacked X-box on my network for now. I'll use my R10 unhacked for another year or so, until more convergence occurs for HD DVR, then maybe get a total hummer of a unit for my main Tivo (or DVR if Tivo doesn't keep up). I will ensure at that stage that I can network it.

I'll be anxious to see if some of the market convergence occurs around a Media PC, with no monthly charge.

Gunnyman -- I have two points.

First, my obsession is beginning to escalate. My Dad picked up a cheap HDVR (35 hour), thereby escalating a Tivo arms race, so I bought a refurb DSR7000 figuring I'll end up doing something with it. I'm having visions of networking a hacked Xbox, and a hacked Tivo, with my little notebook computer as my control console.

Second, after reading tons of your posts, I just now noticed you were in Greenville. I'm in Greenville. This bodes well.
