Just a heads up for those of you out in Tivo land!
My old & trusty Linksys BEFSR41 v2 that has served me for many years had appeared to be causing problems with out Xbox 360 Live connection. Also I caught my 14 year old son chsatting with friends on the internet at 2:00AM!
I decided a new router was needed for compatibilty with Xbox Live and advanced security, e.g. locking down the net after XX time.
I went with the WRT54G & found that Xbox live issues vanished! So far so good!
I was looking thru the different setting & came across this new Parental Control that you can subscribe to. I decided to give it a test. I liked the idea of restricting web, email & chat as well as the abily to generate reports to see where the younger ones where hanging out.
Actually, it's rather slick! You subscribe & setup user names and passwords. You then setup the time restrictions & such. WHen a user fires up a PC they must first open a web browser. The parental controlls "Hi-jack" the home page & present the user with a logon screen. After you logon all is well and you can do just about anyhting as long as it's in the policy you setup.
All was well till I noticed that I was getting a connection issue on the Tivo. I'd get a "Failed while Negotiating" message when trying to connect to the Tivo service. I started cruzing the forums looking for solutions & I ran across some MTU router settings. Went into the router to find the MTU settings & sew the parental controlls page......
BINGO!
A light bulb lit in my head....
I disabled the Parental COntrolls & all was bak to normal. I'll have to check & see if I can by-pass hardware like the Tivo but for now I'll just put time restrictions on MAXC addresses.
Just thought I would pass the information along to others!
