One of my Hughes HDVR2's stopped working a week or so ago. Basically, when plugging it in all I get is the Welcome...powering up screen and it gets stuck there. It does not respond to button presses on the front panel nor does it seem to respond to the remote.

From what I have read, this could mean the HD died. I contacted DTV and already have an R10 as a warranty replacement, but there was no card so I assume I am supposed to use the one from the dead machine. However, before I do this I wanted to see if there was a way to test if it is, in fact, the HD...if so then I can just replace it.

Can someone point me to a site that would have some directions on setting up a spare HD to test? All I want to do is see if the HD is bad...if so, then I will probably buy an upgraded drive, put it in my other HDVR2 (it's the one we watch the most), and put THAT hard drive in the one that is dead.

Then, I guess I have to see about getting a new card for the R10....do I get that from DTV?

Also, should I hook up the R10 or see about getting another HDVR2? I see information about being able to network the HDVR2s, but I am not familiar with the process or utilities to make this work (zipper?) Being able to move recorded shows across HDVR2s would be FANTASTIC, as I am currently wiring my basement so that everything will be networked together.

Most hard drive manufacturers have a drive test utility available on their web-sites to test their hard drives. Unfortunately the test does not always catch things that can cause Tivo problems but if the test comes up bad you know it's ready for the trash.

Use the LBA-48 boot CD from PTVUpgrades to copy the hard drive image from the working HDVR2 to a new HD. One of the upgrade guides will give you step by step instructions. Worse case, you have a new HD when you other HDVR2 dies.

The Zipper and the Enhancement Script can then be installed to enable the USB ports and facilitate multi-room viewing.
