View Full Version : Static on VHS playback

I've checked multiple places for the answer to this question, but haven't found anything that will solve the problem.

I have a Panasonic PV-V4624S (or close to it) hooked up to a Humax 2.0. When I save to a VHS tape, the sound while the DVR is playing is fine. When I play the tape back to make certain it's ok, I can hear static, almost as if another channel is coming through.

I called TIVO to find out if I have the setup connected properly and that seems to be ok. They suggested that it is the cables I'm using, but these worked perfectly with the VCR that just died (started eating tapes). When that started happening, I switched it out with another VCR I have, so it was a matter of a couple of hours in between using the old and setting up the new.

The TIVO people also suggested that it might be my VCR. If this is the case, any suggestions on another that doesn't have these static issues?

TIA,
Nancy

Tell us more about how your Humax is connected to the VCR, and if anything else is connected to the VCR. What cables are you using? Which inputs & outputs? Try disconnected everything from the VCR except the Humax Tivo and see if that helps.

Here's the set up:

I have a splitter from the cable to the tv and another to the TIVO.

On the TIVO, I have an RF cable in from the cable.
RF cable out to the VCR
RF cable in to the VCR

Nothing else is hooked up to the VCR.

I've recording with the following variables:
1) Remove splitter, connect TIVO directly to the cable.
2) Remove the cable to the the TIVO altogether, record from TIVO to the VCR without any input signal.

This leads to me to believe that it's a problem with the VCR. Last night I bought a new RF cable and recorded with the same results.

If you can hear the sound through the VCR while it's recording and it doesn't sound bad until it plays back, then it must be the VCR.

Wait a second...

Are you saying that you're recording from the TiVo to the VCR by way of an RF cable?

That's anything BUT the way to do it. I mean, it would usually work but not with the best results.

You want to use the Audio/Video jacks on the two machines, and run RCA cables.

TiVo video out to VCR video in

TiVo Left and Right audio out to VCR L & R audio in

This could give you much better results.

You'd have to set the VCR to record off is A/V inputs, whether that's by hitting "input", "video", or just inputting channel number "00". (Different methods by different VCR makers.)

The more advice I hear, the more I'm convinced that it's the machine itself. I tried the A/V connections with the same results.

I guess I'm off to get a new VCR, or maybe even a DVD recorder.

Thanks for all your help.
