Hi,

I have a 40 hour unit that I would like to upgrade. Weaknees had a kit for self upgrade, but after the latest software update (7.2) they now require that this same upgrade requires a 'Pro" install. (I would be sans TIVO for 2 weeks) Ugh!! So I would like to purchase a large drive and install my self using the update info on the Weaknees site. Has anyone tried the self install from Weaknees, after the software update? I really do not want to out right replace the Drive. I have many settings that I do not want to loose. Any help would be much appreciated.

regards,

Chris

Buy the hard drive you want to add from cheapest place (not weeknees) and download the PTVUpgrade LBA48 software. Read lots from the stickies at the top of this forum and you can do it. If you get stuck just post. Tons of folks here can help. Simplest plan is to buy as big a hard drive as you can afford and use it instead of existing drive. Everything can be copied over and you will be in business.

Hi,

That's for adding a second HD. Why not just by a single larger HD to replace the one you have?

Thanks for the info.

Is it not better to drop a second drive in the Tivo? I thought since I already have a 40 gb drive, that if I drop another 160, then I get 200, and don't waste the old drive. I hate wasting stuff. Also what about this whole "quickview" thing. Is it really necessary?

Chris

I'm not a guru like many here but if you want to hold on to your Tivo for a long time you are better off replacing the drive as opposed to keeping both the old and new. Put the original drive away for future repairs/upgrades in case you have a drive failure. It's a lot easier to have a sound original drive to fall back on.

Just my advice. Others may disagree.

Good luck.
