I have copied my tivo image using MFSbackup to a 10GB drive that I formated as FAT32. The only file on this drive is my tivo.bak file. I then power down and add my new 80GB drive onto the pc and boot into linux and I see that hdc = 10G and hdd = 80GB. I then run the mfsrestore comand and I get: restore failed: backup target not large enough for entire restore.

I do a fdisk -l and I see that my new 80GB drive at 1024 and the 10GB drive is at 9057. So it appears that the partition is incorrect on the new drive. Is there a way to increase it so its one large partition?

Thanks for any help you can offer me...

Make sure your jumpers are correct. Some reason you are using the secondary channel instead of primary channel? Doesn't really matter. I gather the drives show correctly in Linux after you boot and scroll up a bunch of pages? If so, please list the actual commands you used (line by line) so we can see if there is a problem there. What was the size of the original drive? Also would be helpful to have manufacturer and model number of the TiVo.

I am moving from a maxtor 80GB drive to a Western Digital 80GB Drive. Not really an upgrade in space as much as getting rid of a loud noise drive. had a 10GB drive that I formated as FAT32 to do the backup to. Once it was over there I installed the Western Digital. I am at work right now so when I get home tonight I will post the actual fdisk report and the mfsrestore command that I am using. I am sure that I have the jumper right since they report back the correct size on boot up, (yes, I <shift><page up> several time to see this). I am just concerned about the partition size. I did format it FAT32 using the Western Digital boot floopy. Is this possbly my problem?

The Tivo drives do not need to be partitioned or formatted. The restore process wipes them clean and reformats them on the fly (not FAT32). FAT32 is only important for the hard drive receiving the actual tivo.bak file. Is the Maxtor 80GB an original drive or was it an upgrade drive? If an upgrade drive you may need to get a fresh backup image to use for the restore. Once a drive is upgraded it cannot be used to make a working backup image.

Thanks for the information, I had no idea that the drive is formated with the mfstool. I finally got it to work. I had to restore to a 160gb drive and not the original 80gb drive. I guess the image file I used need to expand further than what my 80gb drive would allow. I am back in business! This should make my wife happy and maybe I will get a little something, something for the effort! ;)

Thanks for this forum, you all are the best!
