I have an upgrade DTiVo with a 160GB + the original 40GB. The 40GB drive recently developed bad sectors and the unit became unbootable, hanging on the Welcome screen. I had to replace the drive and restore the TiVo from the backup image I made of the original 40GB drive. The restore went fine. However, when I tried to boot the restored TiVo it is still hanging on the Welcome screen.
I'm now wondering if the original hang wasn't necessarily due to the bad sectors on the 40GB drive. Prior to it becoming unbootable, the TiVo had twice frozen solid, leaving an image of what was currently playing on the screen but was otherwise unresponsive. When it became unbootable I quickly discovered that the 40GB drive was bad. Now that I've replaced the 40GB drive and the TiVo still doesn't boot, I'm wondering if the original hang had another root cause and the bad hard drive is just a coincidence.
What kind of diagostics can I perform at this stage? Is a TiVo recoverable if all you can get is a Welcome screen?
