OK so I LOVED my Hinsdale upgraded TiVo, but it crashed after three years of faithful service. I don't know where to start for service options, other than I know TiVo won't touch it, and I imagine Sony won't either.
Where do I start? I have no ideas whether it is the original or added HD either.
Thank you for patience with the newbie here.

You can start by running a diagnostic on both drives. Download the manufacturer's diagnostic software from their website. It usually fits on a floppy disc that is bootable. Install the Tivo drive you wish to test in your PC, boot from the floppy, and run the non-destructive tests. If the drive is bad you'll know in short order.
Get another drive to replace one or both drives in your Tivo, as required. If you don't have a backup image, check Stan Simmons' thread to download one for free or buy an InstantCake image from PTVUpgrade for your model Tivo. It is downloadable as an ISO image that you burn to CD-R. You boot from the CD in your PC and follow the prompts to restore the image to one or both drives. Check Hinsdale's How To for info on setting up the drives in your PC to restore the image. Be particularly careful of the jumper settings on the drives and also note the location of each drive when you install them in your PC (i.e. primary slave, secondary master, etc.).
Shut down the PC and install the drives back in your Tivo. Power it up and cross your fingers. If everything went well your Tivo will be up and running with a new lease on life. Rerun guided setup and let the guide data fill up and you should be all set.
