View Full Version : Up/Down remote issue

Right after the superbowl yesterday, my HD Tivo started to act really strange. If I bring up any menu (tivo or guide) where I can go up or down, pressing the up or down arrow once will result in the tivo repeating the command over and over again (averages about 15 times). The tivo sits in a closet with a IR system and I initially though that was the problem. I disconnected the IR system and that didn't seem to fix the problem. I switched from my universal remote to the one that came with the unit and that didn't help. Rebooting doesn't help either. Has anyone seen this problem before? Everything was working perfectly until after the super bowl (maybe my tivo is a seahawks fan).

Check the room for other remotes, stuck in a cushion or under something.

That's not the problem. If that were the case I would expect it to happen without me having to press the up/down button. It only happens when I press the up/down button. Have also tried it in my equipment closet and there are no remotes in there.

If a remote was constantly transmitting it would effect a repeating command like CH UP & DOWN and VOL UP & DOWN more then a single blast command like play.

If the remote were constantly blasting I would expect to see that on all the Tivo's I have which isn't the case. It's only happening with the HD Tivo and if I press the up/down and then quickly cover the front of the remote, it still happens.

Edmund is an expert on remotes and their behavior (even if he is too modest to say so).
I would not take his suggestion lightly.
Interaction between remotes (i.e., the intended remote and the errant remote) would not necessarily be consistent between devices that are not using the same device codes.
I have seen examples of sunlight hitting an IR receiver at just the right angle and intensity to cause erratic behavior for IR remote extensions.
