I just upgraded my Humax DRT800 from a Seagate 80gig drive to a Hitachi 250 meg drive. The new drive makes to much noise. I did not even hear the Seagate drive.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a large capacity 250gig or more drive thats as quiet as the 80gig drive.

How about another seagate? Samsung is good.

I believe there is a utility available that can be used to quiet down Hitachi's. If you have nothing else better to do you can search the forum, or just wait until some kind soul finds this thread and posts the relevant info. Seems like I just all about this in past few weeks here somewhere.

Here's the hitachi utility:

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/downloads/Ftool-ver200.exe

I've used it on Maxtor, Western Digital, Seagate and IBM drives. Just don't set / change any options if you don't know what they do.

I've used the accoustic mode alot; it makes a HUGE difference.

Tried your suggestion and it worked fine. I was going to pull the drive and return it to BestBuy though because I did a search of there hard drives on there web site and seen they had a Seagate 400G on sale for 199.99 of which I bought the Hitachi for 169.99 for 250G.

I should have done the search before I even did the upgrade because the 400G Seagate was on sale according to the website but as always in the store itself the drive was not marked with the sale price and when I woke up this morning the sale was no longer on the bestbuy website for the 400G. I also noticed that the Hitachi drive I bought there was also 159.99 on there website so I went back today and got a refund of the difference plus the sales tax for the difference.

The Hitachi tool does not support newer Seagate drives (starting with the 7200.7 series).

I bought the Hitachi for 159.99 for 250G.

FYI, that's extremely expensive. When on sale, 250GB should be $80 or less after rebate.
