Anyone experienced w/upgrading the Humax DRT400? All instructions I have found only address upgrading Tivo boxes w/out integrated DVD recorder. I have NOT yet purchased hard drive or upgrade kit. Not sure if I can add a drive, or must replace the existing one -- this will dictate what size GB drive I purchase.

Thanks much.

I have experience upgrading a DRT-400 by Humax. I replaced the 40GB drive with a Seagate 160GB drive. I have used both methods. (MFS Tools) The method that takes forever but copies the media from the old drive to the new and just cloning the OS over. Unfortunately, you cannot hold 2 drives in this unit.

You have to replace existing drive - no room for another. There is nothing else special you need to know and just treat this unit as any other series two.

This is not exactly true!
I have 2 - 300GB drives in mine for a total of 721 hours @ basic

I used an existing hole for a mounting screw and double sided tape (since only one screw hole lined up) to mount the drive to the rear of the case. I did use a extra Weaknees power trip that I had and added an extra fan(using double sided tape) for cooling. My temp went from 38C for a single 300GB drive to 32C for the dual 300GB with extra fan while placed in my equipment cabinet. My temps were around 5 degrees cooler before being placed in the cabinet.

Helpful info -- thanks.

Do you know if the 160GB provides the largest amount of usable disk space for a single drive on this model?
I guess I don't need an 'upgrade kit', since there's no room for a second hard drive...

You basically can go with as big a drive as you can afford - there is no 160GB limit. Be sure to keep the original hard drive in a safe place in case it is ever needed to do a restore again or in case you need to send the unit back to Humax for replacement. They will currently replace any defective stock Humax unit with a new one regardless of age or warranty status, so you would want to stick the original drive back in before sending it off.
