View Full Version : Upgrading from Airnet to Cachecard question

I've been happy with the Airnet for the past couple of years but the delay in the Tivo responding is beginning to annoy me quite a bit now when calling up the now playing, season passes, etc. etc. pages. I understand that the Cachecard would mitigate the delays to a certain extent. I've seen a number of tutorials on the web for installing a Cachecard but I wonder if anyone could advise if anything needs doing to 'uninstall' the Airnet first?
Thanks in advance

No need to uninstall first - and you can install the cachecard drivers "over the wire" (or should that be "wireless"?:)) before swapping the cards too.
You need the "native install" zipfile and instructions from SiliconDust.

I've just invested in a cachecard to replace my (currently installed but uncontactable over the network) airnet card, and was wondering the same thing as whitebj.
When you say I'll need the "native install" zipfile, what do you mean?
Is the installation simply a case of ensuring that '/etc/rc.d/rc.net' does the 'insmod' for the cachecard driver (so the interface is available to 'ifconfig') and then running 'nic_config_tivo', or does the the 'nic_install cachecard' script do something more magical?

The 'nic_install cachecard' command actually installs the drivers - nic_config_tivo just configures them.
The 'native install' zipfile and instructions are at http://www.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=340
However, if your TiVo is not contactable via the network you will need to pull the drive anyway, so you might as well use the normal CD method :)

I was trying to figure out if the drivers for both airnet and cachecard were copied over to /lib/modules when I'd done the original airnet installation. If they were, then I could just use the serial connection to change the rc.net file to load the other driver on boot, and configure it using 'nic_config_tivo'. However, looking last night it seems only the airnet driver was copied, so I'm going to have to pull the drive at the weekend and download the zipfile from silicondust.
Thanks

I've swapped the airnet and cachecard over, pulled the drive, ran 'nic_install cachecard', set up the network and everything now works........... well sort of.
TivowebPlus works as it did before, as does telnet and ftp to the tivo.
However there is an application (which I can't really talk about on here) that used to work fine - albeit slowly - when connecting to the airnet-equipped tivo, but now it talks to the cachecard-equipped tivo it doesn't seem to deliver the desired results.
If anyone follows what I'm talking about, and has a clue as to how to solve it, I'd appreciate the help.

If you are talking about a tool, have you tried double mode? Can't really say much more on this forum.

I am, and I have, and it still doesn't work.

I've posted on 'the other place', but got no further insight into what might be happening. :(
Putting the airnet card back in restores functionality, which is strange.

The tool works fine in double mode with my cachecard so it can be done. I presume the likes of telnet and tivoweb work with your cachecard?

They do, as does the initial connection the tool makes to get the list of stuff. Its just the bit after hitting 'Get' on an item in the list that doesn't work.

Just to close on this issue, it turned out to be the cachecard itself. I returned it and got a replacement, which just worked instantly.
Thanks for your help guys.
