Hello.. Just a quick question.. I am considering buying a used "Series 2 Tivo with 40 hours" I was just wondering if I have to pay for tivo service or if i can use an alternative "Hack" / "Software" whatever you wanna call it for the TV GUIDE and to be able to SCHEDULE RECORDINGS or if Service is required to do so.

What features are available without the service? can i still schedule records and all that?

Well.. I can watch live TV without it LOL. Bah.. I'll just Pay the 12.95 /Month. There's no activation fee or hidden cost's are there? Thanks Guys ;)

There's probably a year contract to activate it. If you cancel before the year is up, they charge you a cancellation fee. Call them up and ask about it.
