What a great episode. Jaime Presley really is Trailer Fabulous. Adam Goldberg was good. I only remember him from Saving Private Ryan. At least he didn't die in this.

And I'm not sure why she said her uniform wasn't flattering. Actually, she would look good in anything - even an Idaho potato sack. :)

The fact that no one seems to remember Adam Goldberg from the sitcom he starred in this season ("Head Cases") says the network made a wise decision in quickly giving it the axe.

I loved the whole IPOD conversation. Also loved that about 3 seconds before Earl saw Adam Goldberg's character lying under the carpet in the road, son and I said, "What the heck" and then Earl said same thing!! Also disappoined that Catalina didn't prove her "hotness". It was interesting to me that Jamie Pressley didn't look too hot this time, while she was being obsessed over. Randy never fails to crack me up. Loved the tinkle/ploppies line.
Any notice a trend on TV now that so many shows have narrators? Especially sitcoms and dramadies. A few off the top of my head that I watch:
Earl
Scrubs
AD
Greys Anatomy (used to watch)
Love Monkey
Emily's Reasons (used to watch)
HIMYM
DH
Probably a few others I can't think of...

Oh, and nice use of music, just like the last ep. Great to hear Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's "Ain't No Easy Way" and Harry Nilsson's "Joy". One other tune that slips my mind right now.

Not that weird -- they program the scalers that way. Most SD broadcast has a lot of cruft there, so the set manufacturers still try to hide it (and usually go a little overboard.)
Of course, I missed the name the first time on HD -- had to go back and watch it again.
Took me a few minutes to recover from the "it was a clean hit" line... :)

It's not surprising. If you have zero underscan on any 4:3 signal you would be able to see crap around the sides of the TV. On my 720p projector, I have to set the overscan from 100% to 98% when I watch 4:3 stuff because otherwise I will see the timecode at the top of the screen (a bunch of little dots that move like crazy.)

I believe that's the closed captioning/V-chip information that you're seeing there (Line 21 of the TV signal).

Arkansas would be my guess, based on the usual stereotypes.
Q: What do a tornado and a divorce in Arkansas have in common?
A: Either way someone's gonna lose a trailer home.

Anyone notice that NBC has "The List" on the Earl website? Not the actual list that they show Earl updating each week, but the crossed-off items correlate to episode titles.
Here are some that haven't been crossed off yet. Spoilerized for those to whom it would matter...
Had garage sale while house sitting for neighbors
Peed in the back of a cop car
Got lap dance from Ray Moody's mom and didn't pay her
Replaced Sheridan Lang's birth control pills with Tic-Tacs
Pantsed a party clown
Stole cooler with donated kidney in it
Slept with prom date's sister on prom night

Actually, I think they deliberately DON'T tell you where it's based. I think it's just supposed to be some typical small town American town that is dominated by "white trash" types. Could be anywhere really. In my travels I've seen these types of places in just about every state. The accents, while they seem slightly southern, are really not the thick southern drawls you'd find in the deep south. But these days, with our society very transient, a lot of accents are getting melded together.

Actually, I'm thinking western Maryland or West Virginia (which borders the far western corner of Maryland). They mentioned going to the prison in Hagerstown once. I live in Maryland and there is a big prison in Hagerstown, which is in the western part of the state. All the "crab" references are definitely a Maryland thing. But then, the more things they've shown (town names, etc.) makes it seem much more country, so I'm guessing West Virginia or western Virginia (which also borders MD).

Topography and climate are going to match the location they are shooting, regardless of where they mean it to "really" be. That's out of their control.

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Name_Is_Earl)
The location of Camden County has not been explicitly revealed but clues throughout various episodes, such as a bus ride to Hagerstown, Maryland, have implied that the show takes place in western Maryland. The show's creator, Gregory Thomas Garcia, attended Frostburg State University [citation needed], located near Cumberland. In one episode, a character states that his former girlfriend really wanted to go to Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, thus lending more support for Maryland. The appearance of palm trees and the fact that Earl and Joy made a spur-of-the-moment, inebriated trip to Las Vegas (in the first episode), suggests southern California, perhaps the "Inland Empire". There is a Busch beer neon sign in the Crabshack that has the St. Louis Blues (hockey) blue note suggesting a midwest location. However, the most likely explanation is that the location is left intentionally ambiguous in order to represent Anytown, USA — a device employed heavily in The Simpsons.
It's a pretty good article on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Name_Is_Earl)
I thought this was pretty neat... Do many shows do this?
From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Name_Is_Earl)
In "Randy's Touchdown" (1.3), when Earl is in the copy store, Randy is in the background holding a handwritten sign that reads "High Def Rocks." The sign can only be seen when the show is viewed in 16x9 high definition.
Another sign only legible in high definition reading "Carl Hickey loves High Def" can be seen among the campaign materials in "Cost Dad the Election" (1.9).

They've mentioned a few other Maryland locations. Aberdeen I think. Greg Garcia was an intern for a radio show called Don & Mike about 15 years ago. They broadcast throughout the country, but they are based at WJFK in DC. (http://www.donandmikewebsite.com). Garcia is from this area and mentioned half-jokingly that the people of Frederick, MD (aka "Fredneck") were an inspiration when he was a guest on their show. This, and the aforementioned Frostburg State connection, make it seem pretty likely that he would use Maryland as the setting.

There's also Medford, NJ (Burlington County, was thinking maybe Camden Cty, but it is the next county over. The accents just don't fit the NJ scenario)
Medford, MA
Medford, WI
Medford, NY
Medford, MN
As well as....
Camden County, NJ
Camden County, GA
Camden County, MO
Camden County, NC
Probably a few others also. But that's what I could find in 5 pages of google. Like someone said, this is probably just a "Springfield" scenario. Creator just picked a common name that would work anywhere in the USA.

The only other one I'm aware of (not that I'm the ultimate source or anything) is from an episode of "Yes, Dear" (Garcia's other sitcom)
It happened during the last minute of the show - usually where they have one last gag right before rolling credits, may or may not be related to the actual plot for that episode.
Jimmy's sitting on the couch with some guy nobody recognizes. Greg walks in:
Greg: Hey Jimmy, who's this?
Jimmy: Oh, this is <guy's name>, from <guy's hometown>. He won a contest to have a walk-on role on the show.
Greg (walking over to the couch and leading the guy to the edge of the screen): You come over here, and stand in the HD area.

You come over here, and stand in the HD area.
That's pretty funny. This sounds like kind of an in-joke - everyone involved in the production must be pretty aware of "the HD area" because they have to shoot so that it works for both HD and SD. Last thing an actor probably wants is to be banished to the HD area.
