new to modding, Philips dsr704

Hi, everyone. I got a refurbs DSR704 from Directv.
I am planning to mod it with a bigger harddrive.
What should I do next?
Could I backup the hard drive before I activate it?
And how?

Update1: I did a little bit research. Since I only want to upgrade the drive first, I would need to download "Mfs Tools Boot CD".

Update2: I havn't activated the DSR704. Should I activated it first? Should I upgrade the software first? Thanks!

Wait for it to upgrade the software to 6.2, then using a LBA48 aware boot CD, do the "mfsbackup | mfsrestore". You really don't need to back up the old HD.
