Ok, I know there is a big long thread about Directv service with Tivo and having Vonage as the phone service, we've never had it before. I have been reading and quite frankly I'm overwhelmed! So I need some specific help. My husband and I are moving and Vonage will be our phone service. We are taking our Directv and Tivo with us. There will be one other person in the house who also has Vonage and is adding a Directv Tivo.
What I need to know is the best way we should set them up with the Vonage. We are going to have our computers on the Cable connection but they will be wireless, so I guess first thing will be we will need to get the wireless router correct? So would it be best to hook up a wireless adapter to the Tivo or to hook it directly to the router?
I am new to all this and as long as I have detailed instructions I can set it up. I am in no way good at this stuff.
And what exactly is the purpose of needing the Tivo connected to a phone line? In know they say it needs to be...does it affect the programming, ie, if it were not hooked up to a phone line it wouldn't record programs? I thought the guide and things like that were updated through the Dish? Thanks for everything and sorry if this seems like a lot, it's all crazy...I just want to have all our ducks in a row so to speak for when we move in 2 weeks. Thanks!

You can't connect a wireless/wired network device to a Directv Tivo without hacking it. The USB ports on the back were never enabled by Directv, as they didn't want to pay Tivo for the software, nor did they want to face the onslaught of tech support calls regarding using the USB ports.

One model, the R10 is basically hack proof unless you know what chip to desolder, reprogram and resolder.

Regarding the phone line connection, it is not necessary, regardless of what you've read. You'll get a daily nag screen saying it hasn't called in, but that's it.

Well, when the Directv installer comes to get our new tivo and the old tivo and receivers all set up they are going to want a phone line aren't they? I think I recall when I first had it set up he said they would not go any further if there was not a phone line for it to connect to.
