I usually keep a machine around to do Tivo upgrades. It's an older p4 and was running an old 12 gb disk running Windows 98 so it had was formatted as a FAT drive.
I'd like to install a newer Linux distro to keep around as the new upgrade box.
Which distro should I use? How do I install all the mfstools stuff on it?
Thoughts, Ideas...TIA...

Ubuntu is the latest "it" distro right now.
You might be able to run mfstools, and the utilities to handle the TiVo partition map.

I am using Fedora Red-Hat and MFSTools from SourceForge.net
The Fedora Project (http://www.redhat.com/en_us/USA/fedora/)
MFS Tools (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mfstools/)

I actually really like Knoppix Live discs, the dvd rocks. Ubuntu is nice, and its also avail in Live formats and for the Mac!
Most old schoolers I know use Debian or Slack or similar.

Ubuntu is a Debian clone and in general much easier to use than some of the other distros. The help forums for Ubuntu are also some of the best that I've seen. Keep in mind that like all Linux distros installing apps is done using a shotgun approach. As in lets keep installing things until it works. You will of course not be able to get away from this with any of the distributions.
