View Full Version : Do test calls wipe out partial downloads?

Guys,
On my newly-received "no strings" DVR40, I'm having a tough time downloading the 6.2 software. The only phone lines I have available (at home OR work) are VOIP, and, though I used to have 100% success, I'm getting flakier connects these days.
So, the main point is, I know when it calls in and downloads the 6.2, it keeps partial downloads and then resumes where it left off next time it calls in. Well, I've tried hanging my calling options a few times to see if I can get a steadier conncetion, but every time you change the calling options, it HAS to do a test call. Do the test calls wipe out temporary partial DLs? Does anyone know? I am only asking because someone said they do in SA TiVos in another forum awhile back.
Thanks,
Ricky

Just to bring you up to date. ;) 6.2 will be downloaded via satellite, the call home just triggers the software installation. It has been happening that way for about a year plus, IIRC, no more of those 45 minute phone calls. Probably your software hasn't been uploaded via the satellite yet, I think the place to look for that is in System Information under "Service Data Download", it's normally one of those wee hour of the morning deals.
WTF, I thought you wanted to trade that for an R10 or 15. :D

No, actually, 6.2 isn't being sent by satellite. Hasn't been for quite some time. It downloads over the phone now. And it's a big DL. And yes, I am wanting to trade. But as long as I have it activated on my account, I want it up to date/speed.

Check out the "6.2 rollout thread delayed" that I bumped. Tons of folks are referring to the downloading via sat.

It's quite unclear why you make an "It's certain" statement about something that is simply not a fact at all. All DirecTiVo 6.2 software is ONLY downloaded via the DirecTV satellite data channels. There is no 6.2 software on TiVo servers to download, only a trigger module that allows the software install after it verifies that the device has a valid (current) subscruption.

Sorry, guy. You're wrong. I didn't start this thread to argue with people. I KNOW it USED TO BE a satellite DL, but it's not anymore. Why you would feel the need to attack me on this issue is a mystery. The fact is, they took 6.2 out of the sat stream a good while back and put it back opn the phone download. They didn't send everyone a PM and let them know that, but I'm sorry, it's what they did.
Now, can someone answer my original question?

RickyI don't believe that test calls wipe out previously downloaded parts of the 6.2 upgrade, but be pre-warned it takes over an hour to download via the phone. I just downloaded and installed 6.2 this evening on a SD-DVR80 that I setup Monday evening. Note that I forced a call, because I didn't want to wait until February 7th.
Best of Luck with your download and install.

Adding my .02 to DesignDawg's statements. 6.2 for me came down over the phone line on both DVR80's I set up back in December.
Even if 6.2 hadn't been taken out of the Sat stream long ago, I'm betting that with the advent of the R15 and the need for the software update as soon as it powers on, they would have re-purposed the stream then.

If the DirecTiVo was allowed to upgrade to the new software (random rollout process by serial number) and it did not have the slices from the satellite download it would get it over the phone. I do not think 6.2 is currently in the satellite data stream.

FINALLLLLYYYYY!!!!!
My DVR40 FINALLY just finished DLing the 6.2. It was 3.1, and I hooked it up to the Sat long enough to activate it last night, disconnected it, and brought it to work today. I've had to DL the new software over the phone in about 30-second-to-one-minute slices. This evening (I'm working late), since there's no one on the phone or the internet, I guess I was getting a little better VOIP service quality, and I could stay on for 5 or 6 minutes at a time.
FInally, it's up to 6.2
And thanks, everyone, for coming in and settling this argument. It's amazing to me how people want to jump down your throat sometimes over stuff...
Ricky
P.S.-- Now that this thing is 6.2...anyone want to trade an R15? :)

Hmmm, well the situation I described was exactly the way TiVo engineering and DirecTV engineering did the 6.2 rollout. (All previous downloads were via modem line.) From the posts it appears that has changed in the last couple of months, at least since November. No attack attended, but I understand your ire. Neither I nor many of the TiVo engineers were/are aware of this change, but from the statements here it certainly is true. My apologies for any offence or misleading information.

Less than a month ago I upgraded a Hughes DVR40 from 3.1.1.e to 6.2. The 3.1.1 image did not have the 6.2 slices on it. 6.2 downloaded over the phone, after I forced a call, took about 45 minutes, NO cables connected to the sat dish during the phone call.
