I just switched over to D* last week and have been pleased at every turn. Install was easy, customer service on the phone is a 10! I couldnt get the peanut remote to work with my hr10/panasonic audio receiver and they sent me a $15 universal remote for free... works like a charm. I called to get two more rooms added to my account and all I had to pay was the handling fee... the great part was the installer flaked out on me! I called D* and they have me a $20 credit for the installer not showing up, that covered the handling fee and then some. They then set me up with another installer for 2 days later.
Keep in mind, I was an Adelphia customer for 6 years and I've never experienced anything like this. For those of you thinking D* is a pain in your butt, think again.
I know who loves me, and you should too! :D

There are many times when I 'feel the joy' also. Can't complain.

I agree. We have used DTV for almost a decade, and when we moved into a rental last week, we thought (well, my DH thought) it would be easier to just use Cablevision for a while since the rental house was cable ready. BIG mistake. They stood me up TWICE, screwed up the order, then when I cancelled it and told them I'd stick with DirecTV, suddenly a Cablevision guy was on my doorstep. I told him thanks but no thanks. Between the missed appointments, the dozens of phonecalls on my part trying to get things straightened out, I can't imagine how I let myself get talked into thinking about cable. DirecTV has always been great for us, and their tech support has been wonderful.

2 year contract for my initial signup (last week I had my service installed). No extension for the recent additions.
But guess what!... I was paying $80 a month for my cable service and I pay $70 for my D*. Also, I didnt have a HD DVR with cable.... Another great thing thing; I get 40 more channels PLUS 5 more HD channels I never had before!
Booyah!

I have a question about DTV and existing hardware. I have cable and I'm fairly new to DVR's in general.
If I already have a Toshiba RS-TX20 and a Tivo 40 hour, can these be used in conjuction with DTV's hardware if I decided to use their service?

Spoon - when I first got Tivo, I used it with a stand alone Sony DTV receiver via an IR blaster. It worked very well and I was always happy with it - I only changed over to an integrated box to get the better picture quality.

Regardless of how "Cable-ish" they are becoming, at the moment, DirecTV is the best out there in terms of quality and service.
However, they do seem to be losing that edge with the recent string of bad corporate directions they are taking...
1. Dropping Tivo in favor of an inferior DVR.
2. Going to lease-only for equipment.
3. Raising prices almost as often as Cable Companies.
4. Recent deterioration of picture quality.
But right now, and even with all four of those above issues becoming reality, they're still going to be better, but just not by very much.
